Funds to Help Jody fight Ovarian Cancer

My mother was diagnosed with late stage Ovarian Cancer this past week, after two weeks in and out of ER centers and hospitals from the Outer Banks to Chapel Hill. It has come as a shock to family and friends who “just talked to her a couple weeks ago and she was fine”. After already surviving late stage melanoma in 2002, it’s hard to expect to have to fight another battle during your lifetime, but it’s sadly the reality of this awful disease. My mother worked out on a regular basis, eats extremely well, never drinks, and walked about 4 miles every morning at 5 am with a friend. In the period of one short week, after having progressively worsening abdominal bloating, that lifestyle has been abruptly halted. Chemotherapy treatment will begin next week, followed by surgery, and then more chemotherapy rounds, with the hope that this will put her in remission. Ovarian cancer is a stubborn sickness and requires its victims to continue getting checked often to ensure there isn’t a reccurance.

Working full-time at Bonzer Shack and creating art, her passion, have been her financial means for years. Missing just one week of work is detrimental to her financial well being. Unable to work due to pain and current medical treatments, stress is building around the inability to pay monthly bills as well as the consideration of future medical bills that will be rolling in. Her current insurance plan will help alleviate some of the medical bill burden, but a high deductible will be difficult to pay without being able to work. As soon as she has a grasp of how the chemotherapy will make her feel she hopes she will be able to return to work, but it’s too soon for us to have any idea how that will play out. Until then we hope to raise money from family and friends who have any pennies to spare.

Jody has spent countless volunteer hours helping others. If you’ve been to a charity event at Bonzer Shack, you’ve seen her working the silent auction and helping raise thousands of dollars for others. She is always front and center to participate in the GEM Dance Marathon, raise money, and help me by dancing the whole time when I was the chair. She worked for the local nonprofit, Outer Banks Hotline for 15+ years and was always there to volunteer her time to decorate for their annual fundraising event, Festival of Trees.  She’s the last person to ask for help, especially financially, but sometimes we have to swallow our pride and let someone else ask for us.

I know I’m a daughter talking about my mother, but ask anyone who knows her and they will tell you she does for others, she helps any chance she can, and she will continue to help however she can, whether it be from bedrest or when she can get up and start moving!

We will take any help we can get. However you pray, send positive vibes, or get your well wishes out into the world, we will take it! If you are financially able to donate, we would be immensely grateful, or even just sharing our page would be an amazing help.

Week 2 of chemo went a little better than week one! After her second infusion she decided it was time to chop off her hair! The days before and of chemo have been the easiest, a couple days later things get tough. Everyday we are hoping it’s killing a little more cancer♥️

Chemo Day 1 was completed today! They switched her to weekly dosages in smaller amounts as opposed to tri-weekly with larger doses, hoping it goes in and works a little smoother this way. Day one typically doesn’t effect you as much as the two days following so we are anxious to see how this makes her feel. We have been in shock and awe over everyone’s donations, sharing, and amazingly kind words. Thank you again to everyone who has helped us in any way. We appreciate this support and feel so lucky to have so many people surrounding us with so much love.
