Funds for The Quito Project

A typical day at The Quito Project's summer camp starts with shouts of excitement greeting our tutors as they walk into the courtyard.

"Profe Marina, ¿qué vamos  a comer para el almuerzo?  Teacher Marina, what's for lunch today?"
"¿Qué vamos a hacer hoy?  What are we going to do today?"
"¿Podemos jugar el fútbol?  Can we play soccer?"

The day continues with Amanda reading her first book in English, Sarita making a sandwich in cooking class, Manuel and his sister playing with homemade slime, the oldest students running through the playground to solve a mystery for science class. Everyone learns something new, kids run outside for recess, and a generous portion of lunch is served with care. At the end of the day, we say goodbye as the students reluctantly leave -- but they'll be back again the next day for more fun and learning.

The Quito Project is a student organization at the University of Michigan that travels to Quito, Ecuador every summer, partnering with local university Universidad de San Francisco Quito to run a free summer camp for approximately 60 children ages 5-12. These are children that have been recognized by the Ecuadorian government as kids experiencing extreme poverty.  Kids as young as five years old don't get enough to eat, others sit at home the whole summer with nothing to do but wait the whole day for their parents to come home from work. Our program does as much as possible to help with these situations, giving them two meals a day as well as a place to learn and have fun. We also provide hygienic and school supplies to help give them the tools they need to succeed through education, encourage them to continue on to higher education, and provide them with the basic necessities every child deserves.

Our program begins this July, and while we have raised over half of the funds needed to run our program, it is still not enough. We created this campaign to raise the remaining $600 needed to purchase the meals for each child throughout the duration of the program, as well as day-to-day expenses: transportation of our students to the camp, cleaning supplies, and paying our kitchen staff, to name a few. This fundraiser will directly benefit our children in Quito and ensure that our students have access to food and a safe environment where they can have fun, and the only worry they have on their minds is to be kids.

We look forward to working with our students every year, and we don't want the lack of funds to stand in the way of a great summer that will give our students more opportunities to a quality education. With your donations, you will be directly benefiting our wonderful and deserving children, and we couldn't be more grateful!

Every donation of any amount helps and will be greatly appreciated by The Quito Project members and our kids in Ecuador.  Without your support, our program and the education of our students this summer will not be possible!

Thank you!

Sincerely,
The Quito Project
