Fundraising for Boukary Konate

$9,685 of $8,500 goal

UPDATE - we are in contact with a clinic in Tunis that says based on Boukary's scan results, a partial hepatectomy is possible. This is his only hope for survival at this point, and it is not an operation that can be done in Mali. We are hoping to send him to Tunis as quickly as possible. I have raised the goal for the funds accordingly. Thank you to everyone that has shared and contributed to this campaign. Please continue to do so!!

After being misdiagnosed for two months with an ulcer, Boukary found out that he had Hepatitis B and that his liver had suffered significant damage. We have now learned that he has liver cancer. His situation has become considerably more dire in a very short period of time.

This fundraiser will go towards funding Boukary's medical and dietary needs. We have already found someone that will be able to buy and prepare food for Boukary according to his needs. A portion of the money will be used to pay them a wage. Medically, we are doing whatever we can to make Boukary comfortable.

Even if you have never met Boukary in person, there is a good chance that you have crossed paths with him online. He has labored tirelessly to promote the languages and cultures of Mali. He authors one of the only blogs written in Bambara , the most widely spoken language in Mali. Several years ago, he also launched a website to chronicle rural life in Mali with images, stories, video and audio: "Quand le Village se Reveille " (When the Village Wakes Up). Prior to his illness, Boukary would go to work for the Education ministry during the week and then travel to the villages on the weekend, documenting and learning about rarely explored aspects of Malian culture and then sharing them with Malians and the rest of the world. Needless to say, he is an enormous asset for his country.

While Boukary has received some support from the Education Ministry, the funds are inadequate for him to receive thorough treatment and to eat the appropriate diet. Any donation would go a long way to helping us care for Boukary's current condition. If there is a surplus of funds, they will be used to help train new volunteers to continue the "When the Village Wakes Up" project.

I have known Boukary since 2011. I consider him a close friend. He have also collaborated together on several projects, including a grassroots democracy project in Bamako in 2013. Boukary is bed-ridden and unable to withdraw funds himself. I will personally be withdrawing the money and delivering it directly to him in order to pay for the costs associated with his treatment.

I am very sorry to say that Boukary passed away this afternoon, Sunday September 17th. We are all devastated by the news. We have lost a special soul. Boukary's funeral will be held in Bamako tomorrow at 16h at the intersection of Kalaban Koro and Baco Djicoroni ACI, near the Total station. If you are in Bamako and need any help finding the location, please call me at 70 32 03 44. I will update this page with a proper obituary in the days to follow, but I would just like to say that Boukary felt the enormous love and support from his global family in his last days. Rest in peace, Boukary. Allah ka hine Allah.

Unfortunately, I do not have good news from Tunis. Boukary traveled on Friday with his doctor here in Mali. Over the weekend, the doctors at the clinic in Tunis performed extensive tests to determine the size and position of the tumor on Boukary's liver. While the previous scan in Bamako had shown a tumor that was on the left lobe of the liver (where it was operable), the results in Tunis showed a tumor that was present in both lobes of the liver and coming in contact with a vital vein. The doctors performed further analysis on Monday and determined that there was nothing they could do medically for Boukary.

Boukary has since returned to Bamako with his doctor. We have re-admitted him to Dr. Luther's Clinic where he was receiving great supportive care before his trip. He is not in pain at the moment, and he is surrounded by friends and family. Please continue to keep Boukary in your thoughts and prayers. He needs our support more than ever.

I cannot thank you all enough for contributing to and sharing this campaign. Between this fundraiser, and money given to me by individuals in Bamako in person or via money transfer, we have hit the goal and then some. The $8,500 covers Boukary's hospitalization and operation in Tunis and his plane ticket there. We will need additional funds to cover the plane ticket of Boukary's doctor (Boukary is required to have a doctor accompanying him on the flight) and the cost of his current hospital stay in Bamako. Donations I have received outside of this fundraiser are on their way to covering these costs.

As of today, Boukary and his doctor are booked on a direct flight to Tunis Friday evening. We tried to get an earlier flight, but they were either full or not direct flights. In the meantime, Boukary is finally receiving the proper supportive care that he needs to get his strength up, which he will need for the flight. He smiled for the first time today in about 2 weeks. We are not there yet, but things are finally looking up! Thank you again for all you have done to help Boukary. This campaign is a testament to his impact on people in Mali and around the world.

Thank you to everyone that has contributed to and shared this campaign. While the initial goal was $1,000, we could use a greater sum now that we are urgently trying to transport him to Tunis for an operation on his liver. This is his only option at the moment - there is no chance for further treatment in Mali. We are already in contact with a clinic in Tunis and we have made arrangements for a doctor to travel with Boukary. We need approximately 7,000 Euros for everything - travel and medical expenses. If you cannot give something, please share the campaign. Thank you!!!
