Funding for Andy’s Treatment Period

Andy was having symptoms starting from the 8th of May. It started with hiccups that persisted over two days and he said he wasn’t feeling well on the night of the 9th and then on the 11th he started vomiting the whole day. that evening he started having memory loss and confusion. He seemed better the next day (Mother’s Day) but stopped going to work from the Monday after just sleeping everyday which was very out of character.

We suspected depression and by the 18th he was confused again we tried to admit him to ED at Westmead but after 13 hours in ED the intern discharged him despite having a referral from an after hours doctor to say he needs a CT scan saying his bloods are ‘great’ and he’s ‘somewhat logical’.

By Monday the 20th he was having persistent hiccups again. I lost faith in Westmead and in an instant I took him up to Hornsby where they almost discharged him with a discharge summary already written up but I persisted with a mental health assessment.  After the psych doctor and nurse saw him, he expressed concerns to the hand over doctor and that doctor did a thorough examination on him and said to me ‘I just don’t feel comfortable to let him go home, I think we need a scan and I will refer to him the neurologist’.  I asked the nurse afterwards if it might be a mental health issue but she said he doesn’t seem to fit into any mental health concerns and they need to rule out anything organic first with the MRI. He became unconscious that evening until the next day.

We got an MRI on the 21st (he was still unconscious) and immediately he was transferred on an ambulance to the Royal North Shore Hospital because the MRI showed an abnormality in his right frontal lobe.  His conscience only came back that evening after they gave him steroids to reduce the swelling but even till this day he still have no memory of what happened at Hornsby or the first night at Royal North Shore. His hiccups persisted for 4 days before it stopped with all the medication they started giving him after he was admitted into the Royal North Shore.

He had surgery on the 28th of May by Dr Nicholas Little and had most of the tumor (5.7cm) taken out. We got the diagnosis of a grade 4 GBM on the 3rd of June.

He is home now... we start radiation and chemo on the Monday 24th of June for 6 weeks then one month rest and 6 more months of chemo.

Without income protection or centrelink’s help we are stuck with the every day essentials (rent, bills, transport, food, medication etc) for the period of Andy’s treatment which would be months...

From all of us thank you for all the donations so far. Thank you also for the comments and prayers we appreciate each and everyone and is encouraged each day. We are humbled by the response.
