The Friends of Down Syndrome is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which offers a teen and adult social club, educational programs for caregivers and professionals in our community, as well as the Down Syndrome Academy, which is a lifelong education and learning program for adults with Down Syndrome in the Houston and surrounding area.
We offer an academic curriculum (reading, math, science, social studies, PE, etc.) 3 days a week and vocational training 2 days a week. Also included is speech, nutrition, field trips, and much much more.
We are a volunteer-driven organization and the only people who are paid are our wonderful teachers and assistants.
We started in 2014 with just 17 students, and now have 62 students. Our program costs $30 a day, and about half of our students are receiving financial assistance through the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). We have many students that are interested in attending the Down Syndrome Academy, but cannot afford to pay out of pocket and the waiting list for DADS is currently12 years.
Therefore, the money we collect will provide for our Scholarship Fund, which will enable those less fortunate to be able to participate in our amazing program.
A student is required to attend a minimum of 3 days per week Please sponsor a student:
$30 covers 1 day
$90 covers 1 week
$360 covers 1 month
$4,320 covers 1 year
Each day that goes by is an opportunity for someone to attend the school and learn. We would be ever so grateful to all of our contributors. Please help us make a difference in the life of an adult with Down syndrome. We are happy to provide you with a tax receipt letter for your records.
