Fund Artists in the Garden

Donation protected
Residency Stewards Hannon Welch, Em Young & Grace Amber are raising funds for the third season of The Residency in the Garden , hosting creatives - free of charge - to explore their art practice in an urban flower garden located in North Portland, OR. We want to #getartistspaid, so we are asking our community to donate to the Garden Fund - providing artist residents with travel, food & material stipends, as well as supplementary compensation for our documentarians and curators! In exchange, we offer our wholehearted gratitude.

OUR STORY
The Residency in the Garden has hosted sixteen local and national artists over two years, welcoming those interested in contemplating growth, exploration, and experimentation through dirt, canvas and sunflowers.

This week-long artist residency is hosted inside what we call "the heart of the residency" a 16x18’ canvas tent. The tent transforms throughout the summer, oscillating between a bedroom, art installation, and studio space. Artist residents spread out across the garden, making use of the diverse landscape and rare outdoor privacy. Throughout the week we host movie nights, connect around the residency's fire pit and regularly host workshops, introducing the local community to the out-of-town artist. Artist residencies culminate in public showcases, filling the garden with people conversing, eating, engaging with artwork and artists, sitting around the fire, and [occasionally] dancing.

OUR GOAL
The Residency in the Garden has successfully completed two summers of full art programming hosting sixteen artists with zero financial backing. We have seen how financial constraints prevent artists from acquiring materials necessary to realize their ideas. Our commitment to accessibility for low-income artists is stifled by the financial barrier preventing applicants who can’t afford traveling expenses and/or sacrifice a week of work. With your help we will be able to provide for THE FIRST TIME this season's artists with stipends for travel and materials!

TIMELINE
The season will open in late June 2017 and will close at the beginning of September. Over the course of the summer, we will be hosting movie nights, fire-side chats and showcases of this season's artist-in-residents work, all free and open to the public.

BUDGET
Money raised through our crowdfunding effort will go directly to our talented artists, allowing us to offer material stipends for all residencies, fiscal support for traveling artists, and provide financial sustainability for its curators. We will also be compensating artists who have donated their extraordinary talents to document our events and who have shared their skills within Garden Workshops.
