Louis Gabriel Salangsang who is more fondly called Kuya Louis in our family is 15 y/o. Being the eldest, he is the Kuya who looks after his 3 siblings and also his younger cousins. And a loving son to his parents Paul and Pam. He is a typical teenager who is very optimistic and driven to achieve his dreams in life in order to help his parents in the future. CURRENTLY, THIS YOUNG MAN WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A RARE AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE CONDITION KNOWN AS PARANEOPLASTIC SYNDROME. HE IS STILL IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU) OF UST HOSPITAL IN MANILA PHILIPPINES.

Almost a month ago , Louis approached his family about the pain he was experiencing on his lower limbs. His Lola (Grandma) took him to two different doctors and they were told it was due to flu which joint pains are normal since this occurred during the onset of fever. Days passed, on and off fevers became regular, had another checked up from his pediatrician, and they were informed this was due to viral infection. However, during these days, rashes developed on his neck and back, and became more visible on his trunk until they progressed in the random spots of his body. He had another checked up from his pediatrician, blood exams were done and eventually he was diagnosed of Immuno-Thrombocytopenic Purpura or ITP which is a disorder that can lead to easy or excessive bruising and bleeding. The bleeding results from unusually low levels of platelets — the cells that help blood clot. Louis also noticed that he was having trouble with his vision, it was becoming blurry. His eyes was checked by ophthalmologist on December 9 and they were informed that the fluid from his eyes are leaking into his retina. On that same day, he had tea-colored urine meaning that there is presence of blood in his urine. He was then referred to a paediatric nephrologist, series of tests were done and due to his presenting signs and symptoms Lupus was considered and also Dermatomyositis, which are both autoimmune diseases—this is define as diseases in which the body's immune system attacks healthy cells. His blood pressure also shoot up, reasons why they put him to antihypertensive tablets. Due to the complexity of his health condition, he was then sent to Manila to be admitted to UST Hospital from Pampanga last Tuesday (December 10). A group of specialist doctors assessed him, series of tests were then again conducted and blood work ups. Lupus was still their major consideration. All his medications were withheld apart from his blood pressure tablets due to a marked kidney affectation. Due to this, a renal/kidney biopsy was ordered in order to find out the cause of the declining kidney functions. However, it was put on hold as doctors wanted to stabilize Louis’ condition prior to the procedure. On the following morning (Wednesday December 11), his neck blew up noticeably and the rashes got worsen. He had an ultrasound, and it revealed that his lymph nodes are swollen. Lupus was then ruled out by his doctors as the results came negative.

Consequently, to investigate more of his condition, they ordered a PET SCAN, to determine the presence of cancer cells and where they are located. The results came out negative although revealed that Louis’ muscles are inflamed. A muscle biopsy was ordered the following day. On that night, his condition became critical as his blood pressure dropped, he had difficulty of breathing due to the presence of fluid into his lungs and was observed of signs of gastrointestinal bleeding. He was sent to Intensive Care Unit (ICU.) He was intubated to aide with his breathing, Nasogastric tube and IDC/ urinary catheter were also inserted. Louis had a significant decreased of his urine output, a clear sign that his kidneys are not working well, the ICU doctors decided that he will undergo dialysis to improve his kidney function. They also ordered that intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIg) shall be commenced asap to minimise the inflammation which is already widely diffused into the different parts of his body mainly affecting his muscles and other major organs. This IVIg are amounting 128k PHP per shot, which he requires 5 shots to complete the treatment regimen. As of today, he has his first dialysis done, the second dose of IVIg was given. Tomorrow (Monday Dec 16), Louis will be having his second dialysis, and still awaiting for renal and muscle biopsy.

We, his family, would like to ask for your help in any way possible.

A few days after the rashes spread through his trunk, legs and back and is more visible.

Left Photo below was Dec. 11, 2019 and the Right Photo was Dec. 12, 2019, massive changes in just a day.

The rashes and bruises got worse.

He experienced fatigued and had trouble breathing.

He was sent to the ICU due to his blood pressure dropping and the doctors found fluid in his lungs and most of his organs are not functioning well.

This is Louis in the ICU and is still fighting as seen in his open eyes, he's a fighter and all we need to do is give him the chance to do so.
