Support for Serena Tirado
Serena Tirado is a beloved Staples High School teacher who ushered many grateful students through biology, building within many of them a lifelong passion for the sciences. Last fall Serena began treatment for breast cancer. Fortunately, Serena is a born fighter who continues to bravely battle cancer and its aftermath. While Serena is private about the toll this struggle has taken on her and her family, the costs of the medical treatment and lost income present very real and difficult obstacles. She desperately needs our help!
Every day she taught, Serena gave all she had to her students and our community. It is our turn to give back to her. Please do what you can for this special teacher, who is beautiful both inside and out.
Give what you can and pass on the word!!! Every gift is deeply appreciated.

Thank you to everyone for your generosity and uplifting comments - it is clear that Serena impacted students, parents and co-workers positively every day. She is regularly described as a ray of sunshine. Our goal is to continue to bring some light into her life now.
To battle the cancer, Serena has been undergoing radiation, chemotherapy and other interventions for 16 months straight; there is no specific timeline on how long she will continue treatment. Serena's husband stayed home with her for the first 14 months. However, once she ran out of sick days and was no longer employed by the Westport School District, he was forced to go back to work for the health insurance coverage. His new insurance policy does not provide coverage for necessities such as pain relief and home health care. All funds raised will be used directly for Serena's care - medications, home health care and treatments.
During this holiday season of giving, please do what you can to support this very special woman.
