We are Max and Tessa Janes, two feminists looking to open a sex-positive bookstore and sex toy shop. We are two plucky young soon-to-be graduates from Acadia University and request your assistance in helping us start our new business!
Who are we?
Tessa is a young woman who has always wanted to be a teacher. After coming out and becoming an active member of the LGBTQ+ community, she found a passion in educating the greater community.
Max is a trans person who has wanted to teach sexual health for a number of years. They have enjoyed doing sexual health workshops for local non-profit groups in the recent years and made valuable connections within the community.
What is Valley Vixen?
Valley Vixen is a bookstore and sex shop that will be located in Wolfville, NS. We will sell intersectional feminist literature, LGBTQ+ pride supplies, sex toys and sex peripherals. In addition, we will host sex- and feminism-themed workshops regularly, at little to no cost.
So far, we have written a business plan including a two-year budget forecast with both best and worst-case scenarios. In addition, we have legally registered and opened bank accounts for the business. We have business insurance and have also set up accounts with all the distributors that we need.
We have secured a location (3 Elm Ave) and signed the lease. We are currently looking for an accountant to handle our business finances, and have begun taking resumes for hiring employees.
Why are we opening this store?
When Max started university, they realized just how little they knew about sexual health and sexuality. After interacting with other local feminism-based bookstores/sexual health shops, Max developed a passion for providing sexual education where they had not received it.
With the goal of spreading education in mind, Max and Tessa are endeavoring to open a bookstore and sex shop that fills a niche in the Annapolis Valley. There is no other shop in the area that focuses on promoting healthy sexuality. Additionally, there is no shop in the Valley that sells high-quality sex toys at reasonable prices, and we intend to fill that gap.
Why are we crowd-funding?
In this economy, it's hard to get money without already having it. Since we are both just beginning our adult lives, we are having difficulty in securing a bank loan.
Multiple financial institutions have acknowledged that our business will do well, but we fall short in our credit history (we don't have any!). As such, we are turning to crowd-funding to fill the space where we would normally be receiving a bank loan. We also hope to obtain small business loans and grants from the government and will update the GoFundMe page as we receive updates to our finances.
