FSU For Mexico

Around 2:00 P.M. on September 19th, 2017, Mexico was hit for the second time this month by a powerful earthquake. The 7.1 quake struck on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that killed thousands. Cities like Mexico City and Puebla were deeply affected, and the death toll has risen to over 200 people and counting. According to Mexican authorities, the seismic activity caused extensive damage to the cities' infrastructure, levelling at least 44 buildings, including homes, schools, and office buildings. The army, police, firefighters, and thousands of civilians are currently working to comb through the wreckage, looking for survivors, distributing provisions and reconstructing the city.

We are a group of FSU students; many of us are Mexicans living in the United States. We are comprised of Mexicans, Mexican descendants, Hispanics and people from diverse backgrounds that in these times of tragedy did not want to stay with our arms crossed. We were moved by seeing our Mexican brothers help each other and we wanted to help in any way we possibly can. Therefore, in collaboration with many student organizations such as HLSU (Hispanic Latino Student Association), MASA (Mexican American Student Association) and HIGSA (Hispanic Graduate Student Association), we started this campaign with the goal to raise money to help the people in Mexico.

The money we are hoping to raise will go into a bank account under the FSU College of Engineering. Once the campaign is over, the money raised will be wire transferred to an official ITAM (Mexican Autonomous Institute of Technology) account, one of the leading higher institutions of Mexico, located in Mexico City. This university will then be in charge to allocate the money and get the necessary resources to help the people of Mexico in the most effective manner.

As of today 10/06/2017, ITAM informed us that all the funds they receive from this campaign will be invested in construction material to help rebuild the affected areas.

For the sake of keeping control and legitimacy, all the transactions and receipts will be provided by ITAM back to us and back to this campaign.
