Help Us Reach Out to PTSD Sufferers

Tax deductible
Over 30 million Americans suffer from PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Not just limited to military service members, it affects civilian men, women, and children alike, and the statistics are more sobering than you can imagine.

We, the Friends of PTSDJournal are a non-profit organization working in the field of PTSD and supporting PTSDJournal – a service driven lifestyle magazine dedicated to the awareness and treatment of this largely misunderstood and undiagnosed disorder. PTSDJournal advocates for the PTSD community, focusing on early intervention, diagnosis, treatment, and awareness initiatives.

What is PTSD?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event – either by experiencing it or witnessing it.

How PTSDJournal was born?

More than 20% of Veterans from American conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have PTSD. Christian M. Benedetto, Jr. fits this description. It is why he started PTSDJournal.

One Saturday morning Christian’s son wandered into his parents’ room to get into bed with them. Christian was groggy after another restless night of intermittent sleep and nightmares. Startled by his son, he woke abruptly ready to defend himself, grabbing his son’s wrist forcefully. When his eyes cleared and he was able to focus on the hand, he realized it was his 5-year-old son simply trying to wake Daddy up. Recalling the event, Christian says he probably scared himself more than he scared his son.

It was then that Christian realized his panic attacks and disconcerted state of mind were something he had to address. A few days later he walked into his local Veterans Affairs (VA) office. After some consultations and doctor visits, Christian was diagnosed with PTSD. He started therapy, and less than two years later, Christian was able to manage his every day life. He has become a better father, worker and person.

Getting help for the invisible wound that was killing him inside influenced Christian to start providing support and healing to other sufferers, and this sparked his interest in creating PTSDJournal. He ran into an old friend, Victor Nichols, a successful publisher. Christian asked Victor what he thought about the idea of starting a magazine focused on PTSD. Vic thought it was an intriguing idea.

Two years later, Christian and Vic published their first issue of PTSDJournal, with the motto being Not All Wounds Are Visible™.

The Journey so far

Since the launch, Christian and Vic have financed PTSDJournal out of their own pockets. With their persistent efforts and the grit of a committed team, they have come out with three issues of PTSDJournal so far. Each issue has been a source of in-depth research articles, personal narratives and alternate solutions that highlight the causes of PTSD and the keys to recovery.

PTSDJournal magazine is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder sufferers and their loved ones.
The inaugural issue featured former First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onasis, and her silent battle with PTSD following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. View Issue 1
Actor Gary Sinise, whose foundation supports military service personnel and their families, graced the second cover. View Issue 2
Marine double-amputee Kirstie Ennis became the first soldier to be featured on the cover of PTSDJournal. View Issue 3

The next issue will see Miss USA Deshauna Barber, First Lieutenant in the Army reserves, as the cover subject. Her focus as Miss USA is to increase the awareness of PTSD.

PTSDJournal has gained widespread respect from organizations in the field of mental health and Veteran Affairs. Christian is also reaching out to people through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) reaching out to thousands of followers.

However, with limited financial resources, the two have struggled to get the magazine distributed to a wider audience.

Our Goal

May is National Military Appreciation Month and June is National PTSD Awareness month. We are asking for your support so that we can deliver 100,000 magazines to 80 VA centers across American and to 100 Health and Wellness facilities for individuals suffering from PTSD, trauma and such afflictions.

To reach our goal, we are seeking $50,000 in contributions. All money donated will go to the printing, production and mail distribution of the magazine.

This request comes from a group with skin in the game. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for PTSD sufferers and their loved ones. Our leadership team and staff believe PTSDJournal can be the go-to periodical for this community.

This is the need of the hour

While veterans from all branches of the military are often identified as PTSD sufferers, research shows no demographic is immune.

A child living in a urban city is twice as likely to suffer from PTSD than a veteran who fought in Iraq or Afghanistan. PTSD has been diagnosed in children who have been bullied or witnessed act of violence and women who suffered sexual assaults or domestic abuse.

First responders and survivors of traumatic events like a car crash are ripe to experience a form of PTSD.

Stats:
• PTSD impacts more than 30 million civilians in America and over 20% of members of the military with combat experience.
• PTSD can show up in different stages. More than 9% of soldiers aged 18 years or older returning from Iraq and Afghanistan had PTSD immediately after returning from deployment, yet 31% of that same population had PTSD more than a year after deployment.
• More than 50% of both veterans and civilians with PTSD do not seek treatment.

Knowing the particular triggers, and more importantly, how and where to get help, is the reason why PTSDJournal needs to be distributed to a wide audience.

Like our motto says… Not All Wounds Are Visible.

We aim to make sure those suffering from PTSD see where to get help and this is why we seek your support and contribution.

Thank you

We thank you for recognizing the PTSD community by putting the magazine in the hands of those who need it most.
