Dear Friends,
I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your extraordinary generosity and thoughtfulness during what has been this most difficult and long ordeal.
Please know that I had originally planned on writing a personal note of thanks to each of you when I returned home but unfortunately I have remained in the hospital and at rehab facilities for the last ten months and have yet to experience the comfort of my own home in Hyde Park.
What started out as a simple knee replacement in May of last year led to major health complications. Due to the damage caused by the sepsis infection and the multiple surgeries, and skin and muscle grafts required on my leg, I have not been able to begin the physical therapy that would allow me to return to independent living. And as much as I embrace the adage that “this too shall pass” I have just been informed that the infection has returned and that I will require additional surgery and additional months of rehabilitation.
Please know that your generous gifts to me through the GoFundMe campaign – and the many loving and kind remarks that accompanied your donation – meant more to me than you will ever know. I was indeed humbled and more than taken aback by your outpouring of both financial and emotional support.
I often think back to our early days at the AIDS Walk and recall with both sadness and fondness how we would end the day at the Hatch Shell with the playing of “That’s What Friends Are For.” Those lyrics have all the more special meaning to me today because of your incredible kindness.
