Cumberland FRESH MATCH

Donation protected
Cumberland FRESH MATCH dollars (previously known as Double Up Market Bucks)  doubles the value of dollar benefits for eligible Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) recipients (all commonly known as food stamps) when shopping at the Farmers on the Square farmers market. Fresh Match is a local grant and donation supported program managed by Farmers on the Square in collaboration with Project SHARE

The goal of the FRESH MATCH market match program is to encourage Carlisle area food access recipients to take advantage of locally-grown fruits and vegetables and to provide additional fresh, nutritious food for their families. By promoting wholesome food choices, the program encourages individuals and families to adopt positive, sustainable diet-related behaviors. That is real nutrition and it makes a real impact.

Fresh Match eligible shoppers at Farmers on the Square have their SNAP benefits matched up to $20 per week per recipient and WIC, FMNP or SFMNP benefits up to $10 per week. The additional money is issued in the form of wooden tokens to be used at the market. Established USDA rules regarding the types of food to be purchased with these benefits remain in place.

Community support for the program is amply demonstrated by a remarkable 74% growth rate last season.  FRESH MATCH is currently funded for approximately 65% of our forecasted need for the 2016 season.

 Quotes from Fresh Match recipients:

Marandia :  "I  love the market because I can get fresher stuff than at the Walmart and Fresh Match helps stretch my Access dollars. "

Tamiki: "Oh my gosh, it's been awesome. Especially the fruit for my kids who always go straight for the fruit."

In Cumberland County 11.5% of our neighbors are food insecure.   Help us in our goal toward improving the health of our community one man, woman and child—one family at a time. Offering an incentive that lowers the price of fresh produce helps shoppers stretch their food dollars while keeping their families healthy.

This campaign has been set up by Sherron Biddle who has been the Farmers on the Square volunteer treasurer for four years.  All contributions to the campaign are automatically deposited to the FOTS Orrstown bank account set up for SNAP transactions.

Alternative forms of contribution to the Fresh Matach program include writing checks to "Farmers on the Square" or to "Project SHARE".  In both cases they should have a note in the memo field for "Fresh Match".  These can be handed to the volunteers at the information table at the market.
