It's official! We are building a school garden for our beloved students at Frenchtown Elementary School. But we need your help!
Our Story:
Over the past year, a small group of inspired parents have been organizing, planning, and scheming in order to determine the best course of action for bringing a school garden to life. We have been very fortunate to have received continued support and guidance from the FES faculty, School Board, PTO and lots of awesome community members. And now we are reaching out to you, our dear friends, neighbors, and relatives. We need you!
Our Mission:
The purpose of the Frenchtown Elementary School Garden is to create and sustain an outdoor classroom for our students. The garden will provide an inviting, engaging, instructive, and authentic living-laboratory, fostering hands-on experiences that enhance curriculum across the board. It will be an opportunity for our children to learn about the power, history, and science of growing healthy food, while promoting meaningful outdoor activity and fostering cross-grade relationships and a connection to the earth and our wider community.
Our Plan:
The garden will be located in the back of the property by our Outdoor Classroom (seems appropriate, right?). The program will be starting small, with an after school Garden Club. Our intention is to grow student involvement over time, slowly integrating the garden into lesson plans and curriculum during the school day, as appropriate.
We are slated to break ground over the weekend of May 14 & 15 (weather permitting).
How You Can Help:
Donate time, money, supplies, or simply help spread the word. We need and appreciate donations of any kind - whether it be a bag of fertile soil, a garden hose, money to install a deer fence, a seed from your garden, or a helping hand. Please consider assisting us in our efforts!
Specific Items Needed:
-18 4in x 4in x 10ft pressure treated fence posts
-10 2in x 4in x 8ft pressure treated (doors)
-20 2in x 8in x 8ft Pine boards (raised beds)
-Fencing: 3 rolls steel rectangular hole fencing 5ft x 50ft
-10 bags 60lbs Sakrete
-40 Cubic Feet clean fill dirt
-40 Cubic Feet Organic Garden Soil
-1 roll 4ft x 220 ft Landscape Fabric
-Garden Shed
-Composter
-Hinges/Door latches
-Auger Rental for Fence posts
-Garden tools (adult & kid sized)
-Gardening gloves (adult & kid sized)
This garden project is not funded by the school or the state - our team consists of parents and community members who wholeheartedly believe in this project and have donated their time and resources for free!
