Free Pride Glasgow 2016

Free Pride is back!
Free Pride is back, and we’re going to be bigger and better than ever! But we need your help to make it happen.

Last year, we came together to bring an inclusive, accessible, and radical event for the LGBTQIA+ community in Glasgow. We were tired of being patronised and marketed to by large companies, of having our histories pink-washed, of the exclusion of people of colour, trans and non-binary people, disabled people and other marginalised identities, of the real issues facing our community being swept under the rug.

We didn’t think it was right to charge money to attend Pride, excluding those who can’t afford  expensive tickets. We decided to organise a free and radical alternative to commercialised Pride events, and it proved to be a huge success! We want to build on this to create another amazing Free Pride event on the 20th August 2016.

What We Need
All of your donations will contribute towards putting on a free, inclusive and accessible event.

Our main costs are hiring an accessible and easy-to-find venue, and covering other accessibility costs, such as hiring BSL interpreters.

Our other costs include art and crafts materials, posters and flyers, equipment for the quiet room and any costs we incur for fundraising events such as venue hire. As we cannot pay our performers a fee, we would like to be able to pay their travel expenses!

What you can expect from Free Pride!
We will be back in the Art School this year, and we will be holding both day and night time events. We’ll have stalls and talks looking at important issues facing the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as fun interactive workshops!

There will be film screenings and discussions, as well as arts and crafts and a quiet space. We’ll also have a night time event with performance and DJ sets so you can extend your Pride fun into the early hours! We want to show LGBTQIA+ people in our city that a free and radical Pride can exist, and provide them with an accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable experience!

The Impact
Hundreds of people attended Free Pride last year, and we’ve had so much positive feedback since then! Many people have told us this was the first Pride event they felt welcomed at, and that they really enjoyed having a radical alternative to Glasgow Pride.

Since then we have built a community around Free Pride, attending events and protests together, holding a Free Pride Christmas fundraiser for LGBT Unity, and making links with other LGBTQIA+ community groups in Glasgow.

Here are some comments from people who attended last year:

‘Enjoyed the atmosphere and safe space and being among like-minded people.’

‘Marching with a strong, political, queer bloc meant Pride felt powerful again.’

‘This was also my first pride as the whole pride thing never really appealed to me. I never felt it was actually trying to change anything…it didn’t focus on more marginalised groups, so this whole event was pretty much exactly what i was looking for.’

‘It was amazing, especially for its first one. HUGE respect and love to all  involved. It’s such an important event for young people and newly out/not out people and I think yous provided a safe space and worked really hard to try and meet peoples needs.’

‘The whole day was great, it was clear so much work and passion went into organising it.’

‘It was definitely a great day. The atmosphere was really friendly, comfortable and welcoming.’

Other Ways You Can Help
If you can’t afford to donate, there are plenty of other ways to help! You can get involved in Free Pride by coming to our meetings, organising an event or fundraiser, offering a skill such as design or performance, or just showing support on Facebook and attending our events!
