Free Mom Hugs Tour 2018

$4,881 of $5,500 goal

Who doesn’t need a Mom hug? But for some, that hug can be the difference in life or death. The overall rate of homelessness and suicide in the LGBTQ community is nearly 10 times the rate of the general population, according to the CDC. Furthermore, it is estimated that 25 percent of LGBTQ youth who come out in religious circles are immediately turned away by their families.

Free Mom Hugs is a non-profit group of Christian moms who attend LGBTQ events and offer mom hugs as a show of unconditional acceptance and love. We also provide resources and education for LGBTQ youth, as well as parents, family, faith leaders, education providers and more.

May 4-19, Sara Cunningham, founder of Free Mom Hugs and author of How We Sleep at Night, will take the Free Mom Hugs banner on its second annual tour, stopping at the Matthew Shepard site in Laramie, Wyoming, on Mother’s Day. Shepard was a 22-year-old gay student at the local university who was beaten, tortured and left for dead.

Other city stops include Oklahoma City, Wichita, Kansas City, Des Moines, Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Santa Fe. Along the way, Cunningham and her LGBTQ son, Parker, will share their stories, and share their hugs with the local LGBTQ communities.

10 Cities. 10,000 Hugs.

“Every time I’m out with the banner, I meet more youth and young adults who need reassurance that they are not alone, that there are people who love and support them,” Cunningham said. “I also meet parents who need to be encouraged on their path of loving and accepting their LGBTQ kids. That’s the message we will carry along with our banner.”

Thank you in advance for your support of this cause, and of love, dignity and acceptance for all people.

The original goal was THE DREAM. The total would have allowed us to conduct all of the luncheons and provide all of the resources we wanted to. But that was our plan, and God is showing us the Tour needs to look a little differently than WE envisioned!

Our new goal will cover food, gas, lodging. some basic marketing and resources. The rest, we will trust God will take care of as we have need!

Thanks for all of your support and please continue to share!

I've been asked about the goal and where that number comes from. That goal covers gas, food and housing, as well as the Free Mom Hug banner and bags of pins! But a large chunk of it comes in funding luncheons for area civic, business, education and faith leaders who are ready to hear our stories and start some needed conversations. We have luncheons scheduled in multiple states and will be bringing in lunch and booking venues for those.

Hope that answers your questions! Please feel free to let me know if you have any more questions! Thanks for your support!
