FRC Team 5458: Digital Minds (team5458.com ), a fourth-year robotics team in Woodland, California, is participating in FIRST, a worldwide robotics competition for students. The team is composed of Pioneer High and Woodland High students.

Our team aims at providing students with hands-on experience in STEM and serves as a productive learning environment that fosters collaborative skills in engineering and management. The team is student-run; thus, high school students are exposed to the world of mechanics, programming, design, and electrical work.

Every season, FIRST Robotics holds multiple FIRST Robotics Competitions (FRC) where FRC teams compete together for a team rank. In this 2018 competition season, the team’s task is to design, program, and wire a robot that can grab and deliver “Power Cubes” to take control of switches, as well as lift two similar robots above a platform.

Last year, we ranked 12th out of 56 teams at the Sacramento Competition and was able to be alliance captains. At the Las Vegas Regional, we placed 9th out of 49 teams and were alliance captains once again. After being selected through the waitlist, our team placed 2nd in our division of 67 teams at the 2017 Houston World Championships.

This year at Sac Regionals, we placed 52nd out of 65, and while we didn’t place as high as we hoped, it was still a valuable learning experience. For many of our members, it was their first time experiencing a competition and witnessing a live match.

Building the robot is an adaptive process, and despite our struggles in Davis, we were determined to improve and diligently worked to resolve the mechanical issues in time for the Central Valley Regional, which took place April 6th to the 8th. There were 48 teams competing over the weekend, and Digital Minds came out with a much-improved rank of 9th overall. The 3rd ranked team in the competition decided to choose Team 5458 as their first alliance pick, and we went on to push to three quarterfinal matches. Just like last year, we made it to the FIRST World Championship in Houston through the waitlist!!

We are continually growing the team, and want to be able to send as many, if not more, members to this once-in-a-lifetime event full of other amazing students from all over the globe and an energy unlike anything else. Please help us expand the reach of our team and its mission to progress and empower the youth of our communities.
