Somos el equipo de Formula SAE de la universidad Simón Bolívar, una agrupación estudiantil con más de 20 años de trayectoria conformada por estudiantes de diversas disciplinas. Tenemos como objetivo formar profesionales integrales mediante la construcción de un vehículo de monoplaza destinado a participar en la competencia anual de Formula SAE en Michigan, USA, donde participan universidades de todo el mundo. Nuestros integrantes desarrollan distintas habilidades y destrezas en las áreas de diseño, manufactura, manejo de proyectos y gerencia las cuales contribuyen a su formación como profesionales integrales.
We are the Formula SAE team from Simon Bolivar University, a Venezuelan student group with 20 years of history comprised of undergraduate students from diverse careers, our main goal is to train well-rounded/multitalented professionals. To achieve such goal, we all take part in the construction process of a single-seater race car, with the aim to participate in the annual Formula SAE competition held in Michigan, USA. We compete with universities from all over the world and our team members develop several skills in the fields of engineering design, manufacturing, project and team management, which all contribute to their education.
El equipo, a lo largo de su historia, se ha posicionado como una referencia en el continente, siendo el primer suramericano en participar en la competencia y la primera universidad latinoamericana en llegar a las finales de diseño. Entre nuestros logros se encuentran: el segundo lugar en la competencia de diseño de frenos (2018) presentada por la corporación Akebono Brake y el primer y tercer lugar en el evento de costo en los años 2013 y 2014 respectivamente. Este año, obtuvimos la posición 19 dentro del evento de diseño ingenieril y el 1er lugar en la competencia de costos.
Throughout its history, the team has been a reference among universities in South America, we were the first team from the region to participate in Formula SAE Michigan and the first Latin American university to reach the design event finals. Among our achievements are: second place in the 2018 brakes design competition held by the Akebono Brake Corporation and first and third place in the cost event of 2013 and 2014 respectively. This year, we ranked 19th in the design event and won the first place in the cost event.
Para el periodo 2019/2020 nos fijamos nuevos retos y objetivos con la finalidad de mantener la competitividad del equipo frente a las otras universidades. Realizamos una cambio de motor de Honda CBR600 F4i a un modelo más nuevo y confiable, el Yamaha YZF-R6. Este cambio implica re-diseñar y construir varios sistemas del carro, tales como los sistemas de admisión, escape, refrigeración y cableado para hacer posible el cambio de motor.
Para este nuevo año 2020/2021 tras lograr realizar el cambio de motor, es necesario reemplazar otras piezas como el sistema de cambios de velocidades de neumáticos a uno electrónico y reemplazar la ECU (Engine Control Unit), esto permitirá mejorar la confiabilidad del prototipo durante el periodo de pruebas y en la competencia.
For the 2019/2020 period, we set new challenges and objectives to maintain the team's competitiveness against other universities. We made an engine change from Honda CBR600 F4i to a newer and more reliable model, the Yamaha YZF-R6. This change involves re-designing and building several systems of the car, such as intake, exhaust, cooling, and wiring harness systems to make the engine change possible.
For this new year 2020/2021 after achieving the engine change, it is necessary to replace others parts such as the tire gear shifting system with an electronic one and replace the ECU (Engine Control Unit), this will improve the reliability of the prototype during the testing period and in competition.
Sin duda la pandemia causada por el COVID-19, ha afectado a todas las personas y en nuestro caso, el cronograma de trabajo necesario para poder construir nuestro prototipo. Junto a esto, ha sido complicado conseguir patrocinadores para el proyecto y seguir permitiendo su continuidad. Sumado, la difícil situación que afronta nuestro país (Venezuela), ha dificultado poder conseguir los recursos necesarios para concluir el carro que competirá en Michigan 2021 con todos los cambios necesarios que se estudiaron desde el año pasado y no se han podido concluir completamente.
Realizar estos cambios para mantener el nivel de FORMULA SAE USB representa elevados gastos para nosotros. Por dicha razón, queremos dar a conocer nuestra pasión e invitarlos a que apoyen este grandioso proyecto. Más que un prototipo, diseñamos, construimos y hacemos competitivos a profesionales integrales.
Undoubtedly the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has affected everyone and in our case, the work schedule necessary to build our prototype. Along with this, it has been complicated to get sponsors for the project and continue to allow its continuity. Also, the difficult situation facing our country (Venezuela), has made it difficult to get the necessary resources to complete the car that will compete in Michigan 2021 with all the necessary changes that were studied since last year and have not been able to be totally completed.
Carrying out these improvements to ensure the competitive performance of FORMULA SAE USB means high expenses for us. For this reason we want to share our passion and invite you all to support this great project. More than a prototype, we design, build and make competitive professionals.
