For the Heart of our Soccer Family

Family……….it means different things to different people, but no matter who you are, deep down you know you’re lucky to have one and should consider it a gift. I feel very fortunate to have a family, a chosen family, AND a soccer family. This is about my soccer family. We aren’t a team that wins every game, none of us like to admit that we can no longer play in the open league (under 30) and be competitive, but neither are we done giving our opponents a good match…… not just yet anyway.  Our most recent match was one of those games that sometimes happen. Our team struggled just to string a few passes together while the other team could do no wrong - it’s not fun, but it happens.  We were going to lose; the only question of the night was how bad was the loss going to be? Could we dig deep enough and score to prevent a shutout…………and that’s when IT HAPPENED:

During play our manager collapsed on the field suffering a massive CARDIAC ARREST

Yes I am serious, and no I am not being overly dramatic when I say we almost experienced a loss of life that night, not just a game. Everyone who witnessed this event has expressed that since it did happened, thank GOD it happened when and where it did, in public with emergency resources nearby.  After open heart surgery (quadruple bypass) LOWELL ZENK our teammate, actually our team manager and dear friend, who’s also a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, coach, community volunteer, and small business owner (and the list goes on – but you get it) is out of the hospital and on the road to recovery! WooHoo!!   Did I mention how grateful we are???!!!!!

I share this because while I was offering whatever support I could during the hospital stay, I become aware of some more personal information. I have wrestled with sharing this knowledge because I respect Lowell’s privacy and independent nature…..however, there are many in our circle and community that have expressed a desire to help in whatever way they can, and those of you that know me, know that I’d rather ask forgiveness than permission. Here’s the need:  Lowell owns and operates a small business and was beginning the process of securing health insurance – did you gasp, because I did when I heard. That’s right, he’s now facing a bill for an ambulance ride, emergency stay, 8 day hospital admittance, multiple diagnostic procedures, anesthesia, OR time/rent, cardiac surgeon and team…….not to mention he’s recovering from open heart surgery so additional stress is NOT productive.

Since I don’t do social media I am using this platform to share and inform people about Lowell just in case folks would like to support him monetarily. Funds will be used to pay down the hospital bill or in the short term, provide the means to hire an additional employee while Lowell recovers…..anything to help keep him and his family from being financially overwhelmed during this time. Please know that I am not sharing this with a singular goal of raising money, support comes in many ways.  I am sharing this news because Lowell matters and he’s the guy who is always doing and organizing for others but doesn’t ever ask for help. Case in point:  The first words out of his mouth to the medics after they shocked his heart back into rhythm were, “I’m fine, I don’t need a ride.”

Lowell, let us help you a little this time.
