School Supplies For Kids in Jamaica

Hi, my name is Maggie Chambers and one of my biggest passions is to inspire people to move forward in faith and in purpose. 

For the last few years, I've gone on a missions trip to Kingston, Jamaica where I help to share the love of God in a small community called Union Gardens. While i'm there, we (the missions team and I) conduct a Vacation Bible School at Union Gardens Christian Academy.



This particular community that I help in is very close to my heart. Ever since I was 5-years-old, I would go on missions trips with my family there and run around barefoot with the kids there because they didn't have any shoes on their feet. 

Almost 21 years later, the community has come a long way, but the kids there still need a lot of help. 

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica published a Survey of Living Conditions in 2012, which stated that more than 500,000 Jamaicans (one out of every five) live below the poverty line. Because of being raised in poverty, many children enter school a few steps behind their affluent peers.

There is no free education in Jamaica after Primary School, which ends with completion of Grade 6. 

Children must pass an exam to be admitted into High School. A critical problem is that many bright children pass their exams, but are unable to attend high school because of lack of funds. Many families cannot afford to pay school fees, purchase books, transportation, meals, etc.

Poor or lack of attendance in school leads to high illiteracy rates.

Here's how I would like to help:


I believe that investment in education and sharing the love of God is the only way to break the cycle of poverty which has entrapped and destroyed many Jamaican families. 

This fundraising campaign called #followtheson will provide backpacks full of school supplies to 250 children living in  Union Gardens - a small community in Kingston, Jamaica. 


You can help one child with 
a $8 donation = 1 backpack with school supplies

or

help three children with
a $24 donation = 3 backpacks with school supplies

However, any contribution you are able to make is appreciated.

Every backpack full of school supplies helps a child in need to move forward in education and in hope of a better future.
