Breathing Space: Youth Mental health

Donation protected
Mental health issues among young people are continuously rising and there are not enough services out there to support them.

75% of mental illness starts before a child reaches their 18th birthday, while 50% of mental health problems in adult life take root before the age of 15.

As a Youth Worker, I am constantly hearing and seeing these issues among the young people I work with and I want to act to give as many young people in Leicester a better chance of coping with these issues, feel a sense of worth and to make positive choices over their lives.

Your kind donations will support young people to access a flexible programme using outdoor learning environments that will improve their mental health, social connections, build on their coping strategies and develop a stronger outlook on life.

Your generosity will pay for us to work with young people aged 13 - 19, who live in Leicester City, for them to access a range of interactive experiences that will help them to thrive, feel confident about themselves and to have an overall sense of life satisfaction.

Activities include:

Access to a dedicated outdoor learning environment where young people will grow healthy foods and maintain a community garden with other community members. Interaction with elderly people, giving young people volunteering experiences as well as a sense of purpose.

During our time on here, we will also run outdoor workshops that explore emotional health, coping strategies, dealing with feelings, connecting with others and much more.

A camp away from home. This is an important part of the programme that will give young people a sense of independence, a chance to connect with nature and to further build on skills that will help them to tackle their mental health.

Previous experiences of running these camps have seen young people truly be themselves; putting their phones and gadgets away to engage in social activities and discovered new ways of balancing their emotions to have a higher sense of wellbeing.

Your support could make a huge difference to a young person's life. It could prevent further pressure on our public services and see more young people thrive in our communities.

We want young people to have somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to.
