ABOUT OUR PROJECT: Providing cheap solar powered radio sets to women in marginalized communities.

Fly Sister Fly Foundation champions for the rights of girls and women to an education in marginalised communities of Northern Kenya. We run grassroots advocacy campaigns enlightening community members on the importance of education to their children. Oftentimes;through sponsors and well-wishers,we support some of the girls with school fees, stationery and sanitary pads to keep them in school. Over the years, our main challenge has been how to incorporate technology in our advocacy campaigns and in return reach out to more people in these communities. In 2016 through a YALI grant, we resolved to partner with the local community radio station(Serian FM) and other local NGOS to address this challenge . We provided 100 women with solar powered radio sets with an LED flashlight and thereby positively impacted the lives of over 1000 people in less than 12 months. Following the successful pilot phase of the project, we are currently fundraising to provide 1000 solar radios to 1000 women by 2018 and this project has a potential reach of over 10,000 people in rural Kenya.

HOW THE FINANCES WILL BE USED:-

A custom made solar radio with an LED flashlight, a wind- up crank, a memory card slot and cell phone charger slot costs £25 (including shipping costs from China). In the pilot distribution, one radio set was shared per 5 households in a manyatta(cluster of households). With these funds, we envision providing most women with  solar radios for their households. 1,000 radios will cost £25,000. We will use £ 1,000 to record informative programs on human rights, cultural injustices, women rights, the importance of education for children of all genders, peace ,content on HIV/AIDS and other current issues that affect them. We will have the prerecorded information on memory cards and distribute it with the radio sets since the proposed radio has a memory card slot. £2,000 will be used for capacity building and to  transport the radios to Northern Kenya for distribution. The remaining £2,000 will be used to buy stationery and sanitary pads for children who will be willing to start school immediately. The parents will chip in by providing their children with school uniform that costs approximately £10 per year. All donations above the target will be donated to our local partner Samburu Girls Foundation that rescues teenage girls from early forced marriages and Female Genital Mutilation.
