Love, Photography and One Voice
As a mother of teens who are finding their voice and as a person who has worked hard to find her own, I am honored to have the opportunity to share navigation tools. Coincidentally, serendipitously or perfectly this trip will begin just 2 days after sending my eldest off to her own adventure, her first year of college. Not surprisingly, I’ve been thinking a lot over the last year or two about how critical it is that we create space for true feelings to emerge and independence to grow. What about for children in situations where it might not be a given to be heard? This seems like a good time to consider how I can continue to empower a child’s voice, but maybe this time in a more universal way. The addition of having a chance to document a One Voice mission and help further the good they put in the world strengthens my commitment exponentially.
Together using cameras, journals and a travel ready printer, teens from Nicaragua will get a first chance at what it means to capture and document snippets of their lives from their own unique and powerful perspective.
This skill, the ability to share your thoughts and capture your feelings through journalling and visual story telling is one that is proven around the world to increase confidence, deepen commitment to education and open doors to more connection, creativity and love.
Will you help me bring my gifts to the world in this unique way? I am looking for friends and supporters who are looking for ways to invest in a more hopeful world and who trust me to share my gifts in a way that will make a lifelong impact.
My plan is to bring a camera for every child, a couple printers, journals, ink, paper. I would plan to leave a journal with each child filled with their collection of photos and stories and supplies to continue their discovery. My hope is that there be immeasurable intagibles too. I'd also like to leave behind at least one of the cameras and perhaps a printer/supplies at the school these children attend. If there is enough money, I'd love some help with my airfare too. When I return I'd like to share the curriculum I develop with other kids in other places and spaces.
I hope you will join me.
In loving gratitude-
Starting to see this all take shape in my mind's eye thanks to all of you lovely people.
I had intended to spend today opening and paying for items in existing shopping carts I had created online. It was supposed to be quick. I think my family assumed I'd unpack today, maybe I did too? Wrongo!
Before leaving to visit family in New England I had researched for hours for the right art supplies, cameras and printing supplies as to expedite the ordering process on my return. Sadly, 3 of the items I had decided on were discontinued in that brief period. We sure do live in a quickly changing landscape don't we?
So, I spent the day researching new items, mostly cameras and decided on getting several different kinds of cameras instead of 10 of the same type as I had originally planned. All Canon's though, cause that's how I roll ( and shoot). If your in the market for a new Canon, I've got info to share!
Accountability segue- thus far I have had sufficient funds for 90 % of purchases. From here forward funds raised will purchase as much ink and paper as I can reasonably carry and hopefully offset my airfare a bit. Thanks for your part in this journey!
I am certain I'll have dreams about camera reviews tonight.
Attached is a video made by the people will are partnering with in order to build the performance stage while we are there.
During our trip, mornings will be spent creating and learning the dance and music elements for a performance after the stage is completed. Afternoons will be spent building the foundation and stage. My group will be working on documenting the process through photography and written words in journals as a self exploration project. The trip will end with the first performance on the new stage for the local community, presenting not only the gift of the new structure but all that was created during our time together.
How can you help?
Donations can be made to me directly to avoid the service fees at GoFundMe or made on their site. My email address is LauraGoyer@me.com or you can PM me on Facebook.
If you have a smartphone that has a camera and bluetooth you are no longer using, you could donate it or lend it to me.
If you have SD or CF cards that you are not using, those would help.
If you want to purchase paper or ink, I can send you the link to what will be using.
If you have a hard sided suitcase you are not using for all the gear, lend or donate would be great here too.
Sending prayers for safe travels, good health and open minds are always welcome.
