Firefighters for Nepal: ons verhaal (english version below)

We wensen het u niet toe maar stel… er loopt iets fout bij het koken en uw keuken staat in brand… u belt het noodnummer 112 en heel snel staat de brandweer bij u aan de deur om de brand te blussen.  In Nepal ligt dat anders: niet overal is er een brandweer en daar waar die er is, is die veelal niet goed uitgerust of opgeleid.

'Firefighters 4 Nepal' is een team van Belgische brandweervrouwen en -mannen dat zich vrijwillig inzet om haar Nepalese collega’s te helpen met materiaal, knowhow en opleiding.  Kwaliteit staat voorop in alles wat we doen!

Het idee ontstond na een bezoek aan de korpsen van Bhaktapur (2012) en Pokhara (2014) en leidde in 2017 tot een eerste missie. 

De doelstellingen zijn om het algemene niveau op te trekken, een kerngroep van instructeurs opleiden die vervolgens Nepalese brandweermensen verder gaan opleiden en, op langere termijn, een volwaardige brandweerschool op te richten.  Tegelijk helpen we ook de burgers die in een veiligere omgeving zullen kunnen wonen.

In november 2018 gaat ons team van 16 Belgische brandweermannen en -vrouwen voor de tweede maal naar Nepal om hun kennis en ervaring te delen met hun Nepalese collega’s onder de vorm van aangepaste opleidingen.  Om dit te bereiken zijn bundelen 3 Belgische organisatie hun krachten:
·     Firefighters 4 Nepal 
·    CFBT-BE 
·    Firefighter Mayday Program 

Hoewel we zoveel mogelijk de lokale economie steunen, zal een deel van het materiaal vanuit België verscheept worden.  Het materiaal blijft ter plekke om tijdens interventies gebruikt te worden. De zeecontainer zal dienst doen als ruimte om live ‘fire trainings’ te geven. Verder worden er heel wat modules en constructies gebouwd uit hout die daarna ter plekke blijven. 

Onze teamleden betalen reis- en verblijfkosten uit eigen zak. Voor het financieren van het project worden allerlei acties op poten gezet (t-shirt verkoop, stands op opendeurdagen, scholenacties, enz.) maar gezien we nog wat financiële ademruimte kunnen gebruiken starten we de actie “Firefighters, one world, one challenge”.




Firefighters for Nepal: our story

Nobody wants this to happen, but suppose… something goes wrong during cooking and your kitchen is on fire. You call 911 and quite soon (within minutes) the fire department is at your door to stop the fire and safe your house. This is not the same in Nepal. Not all places even have a fire department. If there is a fire department it is often poorly equipped and severly under trained. 

‘Firefighters 4 Nepal’ is a voluntary team of Belgian firefighters who’s aim is to help its Nepalese colleagues with gear, know-how and training. In all this we strive to deliver top quality in what we do.

The idea to start doing these training-missions to Nepal came up during a visit to the Bhaktapur (2012) and Pokhara (2014) fire departments. Being confronted with the Nepalese reality this resulted in a first mission in 2017.

Our goal is to lift up the overall level of performance of the Nepalese firefighters. Therefor we are going to run training programs to train local firefighters to the level of instructor.  They can then with the teaching materials and gear we provide continue to train other Nepalese firefighters. We hope that one day Nepal can have it own fire academy based up on the first steps we are initiating now. Besides the work for the firedepartmens we are also engaging in local initiatives to teach the local population on safety issues concerning fire, gas,… We want to improve the overall safety for every Nepali person through this.

In November of 2018 a team of 18 volunteers (all Belgian firefighters / instructors) are going to Nepal for the second time. With specificly designed training programs they will share their knowledge, know how and experience with their Nepalese colleagues. To achieve this three organizations are putting their efforts together:
·        Firefighters 4 Nepal
·        CFBT-BE
·        Firefighter Mayday Program

Although we try to support the local economy as much as possible we must ship quite a lot of gear and materials to Nepal. All this gear and material stays in Nepal after the mission. It will then be used to continue the training program or even during future interventions. For example the container used for the shipment will be the training prop for the compartment fire behavior training. Furthermore there are quite a bit of specific props and modules that are constructed and shipped and those are staying in Nepal too.

All team members are doing this on a voluntary base. They are paying themselves for transport and housing. To support this effort and to cover the financial challenge of gathering and shipping all the goods to Nepal we started up this crowed funding action: “Firefighters, 1 world, 1 challenge”.
