Fighting For Cody

This is my sugar baby:

Cody was born on November 2, 2016.  He is a sweet, cute, loving baby.  He was born at 36 weeks and 5 days old at a healthy weight of 6lbs 1oz. and 18 ½ inches long.  I had preeclampsia and was on bed rest for the last seven weeks of the pregnancy.  Cody is my third son, second pregnancy with preeclampsia, and third C-section.  His two older brothers are Wesley (7) and Layne (4 ½, he would want you to know).

During the last two weeks of the pregnancy I noticed a dramatic “decrease in fetal movement.”  The first time I went to triage, I was discharged after being placed on a monitor but when I went to my normal scheduled doctor appointment and told my doctor he sent me back to triage where they again put him on fetal monitors.  After a few hours of his heart rate staying at a resting rate, they admitted to the hospital and said we would have a repeated C-section tomorrow.   Things quickly changed as Cody’s heart rate went from resting to having drops.  The nurses would rush in my room and have me turn to my other side.  Before long the on-call doctor came into the room and said, “We’re taking him now.  Get ready we’re having a C-section in 20 minutes.”  So, at 1:14 am on Wednesday morning, on his great grandmother’s birthday, Cody was born and the world would never be the same!

They pulled Cody from my tummy and my husband, Russell, cut the cord!  I waited anxiously to hear his cry.  I waited and waited and kept asking, “what’s going on?”  Russ responded that they were working on him.  Occasionally I would hear little noises but not a cry.  They gave him breaths and after a bit I heard a faint little cry.  Music to my ears!  The doctors wrapped Cody up and daddy got to hold him for a moment as he brought him to my face.  I kissed my sweet baby and took a quick family picture then they rushed him to the NICU, while I was still open in the table.  Daddy struggled about where to go but I reassured him that I was fine and to go be with Cody.  A few minutes later NICU called the OR to get my permission to give him formula because his blood sugar was low.  And with those words, our CHI journey began.

Cody continued to fight as his blood sugar levels dropped during that first night and he was placed on a c-pap to help him breath.  The next day his doctors called Kangaroo Crew to transport sweet Cody to Texas Children’s Hospital.  Once again daddy struggled as his heart was torn between staying with me and going with Cody.  I reassured him that I was fine and I would be there as soon as I could.  Tears flowed as they took my baby from my arms and loaded him up in the incubator for transport.  This was the first time I was allowed hold my baby boy and just like that we cried as they rolled him down the hallway and daddy waved goodbye!  Now I was a mommy on a mission to be with her baby!  By that same evening I was able to do everything my doctor wanted for me to be discharged.  So, the day after my C-section I was at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Once at TCH, Cody was admitted into level 4 NICU (most severe).  The next few days would be a roller-coaster of emotions as Cody struggled with breathing and was on the c-pap machine, low blood sugars (even when being given extremely high levels of glucose), enlarged heart, antibiotics for possible infections, low blood platelets, Jaundice, and high lactose levels. Before long little Cody had multiple teams of doctors caring for him.  He had his general doctors, an endocrine team, a cardio team, and a genetics team.  With every step forward we would take a step back or something new would present itself.
