Erica Needs a Kidney

Donation protected
Like many of us, asking for help is so hard for Erica and the creation of this page by her firends is bittersweet for her. But she can’t do this alone and she needs our help. Please consider donating what you can and sharing with others who may be able to help. Together we can help Erica get through this fight and give she and her daughter the future they so richly deserve.

About Erica's Fight
In March 2010 Erica went to the ER with extreme abdominal pain. Unbeknownst to her, she was suffering from Lupus, an autoimmune disease that had been undiagnosed and untreated. Lupus was attacking her kidneys and within a year her kidneys would fail and life as she knew it would change forever.

In the time since her kidney’s failed, life has been an unending roller coaster ride. She has been hospitalized with several complications from both Lupus and end stage renal disease (kidney failure). In 2012, she suddenly lost her vision and was in the hospital for several weeks. At one point she was in a coma with her survival in question. There have been multiple hospital stays for unexplained fevers and infections and too many blood transfusions.

Through it all, she has also been raising her 6 year old daughter Juliana and working full time. In 2014, she took on the new challenge as a single mom when she and her husband divorced. This challenge has been particularly difficult as doing regular and painful dialysis along with working full time is hard enough with a partner and narly impossible on your own. But through it all, she has remained committed to being strong and positive getting through this time with the belief that it is temporary.

Even the most prepared person can’t possibly be ready for something as life changing as chronic illness. Facing all of this as a single mom has added a new dynamic and she is facing so many unexpected costs. The purpose of this page is to raise financial support for the costs incurred while waiting on the transplant list and for those she is sure to face as her transplant waiting period comes to an end. Dialysis is very expensive and even with insurance coverage, she is paying thousands of dollars out of pocket. Her divorce has reduced her monthly income and it’s a struggle to keep up with mounting medical bills.

The majority of the costs incurred post-transplant will be the medicines required to keep her new kidney from rejecting. She is allergic to most antibiotics and the one she would require costs around $200 a bottle with insurance coverage. The second post-transplant cost she is also anticipating is post-transplant care. Her transplant center asked me to create a post op plan. Who would cook they asked? Clean? Take me to my daily doctor appointments? And who could? Even with family and friends' supporting as they are able, she would need someone available 24/7, including to drive, for at least the first month. The coordinator suggested hiring people to fill in the gaps, another cost that she can't imagine how she will find the funds for.
