Sometimes Heros need saving too!  Lieutenant Homar Salinas from Mission Fire Department is up against the biggest fight of his life battling kidney cancer.  Homar has always put others before himself spending over 25 years saving lives as a firefighter.  He has done such a great job serving his community that he inspired his son, Omar Salinas to follow his footsteps and become a firefighter for the City of Mission as well.  Homar also has a daughter, Samantha Salinas, and another son Ray David Salinas that also aspires to be a firefighter.  Homar has been married to his high school sweetheart, Nereida Salinas for 28 years and is a proud Grandfather of 8 grandkids.  In December 2017 what seemed to feel like a stomach virus, sent Homar to the hospital.  It was discovered that he had Clear Cell Renal Carcinoma.  This news came as a big shock, as typically this cancer is predominant in smokers but Homar has never smoked a cigarette in his life!  In doing research, firefighters are prone to this type of cancer based off the chemicals and toxins they are exposed to after time.  However, Homar was denied coverage through the city's Workman's Compensation insurance TML, therefore leaving the burden of paying copays, travel expenses, and several other burdens that go along with having cancer.
Homar is currently undergoing treatment at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas and the expenses of driving over 350 miles to get treatment has taken a toll on the family financially.  Being on LOA (leave of absence), as he seeks treatment, does not provide the full financial benefits as if he were working his shifts causing additional financial strain on the family.
Financial contributions would be of tremendous assistance to the family during this time, but if not possible thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated for Homer.  We will keep you posted on his road to recovery as we have updates.  Thank you in advance!

Great news, first steps towards making a difference for future fire firefighters and hopefully for Lt. Homar Salinas! It’s a long journey and fight against the insurance company, but it will be well worth it once the path is paved towards taking care of our firefighters! Assumption Law was placed to protect our firefighters from common cancers that occur while being exposed to toxins on the job, however historically has been difficult to execute when it comes to actually getting benefits covered by Workerman’s Compensation companies. We hope to bring light to this issue to help not only future firefighters of Mission, but to set the precedence for the state of Texas. In the meantime costs are piling up while funds are running low for Homer so all donations are greatly appreciated. It costs roughly $1,000 for travel expenses each time Homer goes to MD Anderson and he will be making his 4th trip soon for another surgical procedure. This cost does not even scratch the surface on what medical bills will amount to which are to follow very soon! If we are successful at overturning the court ruling to provide Homar coverage all donations collected during the journey will be placed in a fund created to help future firefighters fighting cancer that are also denied claims, because the courts can wait on hearings but unfortunately cancer doesn’t wait to be treated! Thanks again for all of the monetary support but mostly for prayers and encouragement along the way!
