Comic Book Arts Education

$2,235 of $4,000 goal

My name is Sean Eike and I am an illustrator and art educator in Des Moines, Iowa. When Wizard World Des Moines Comic Convention was announced for June 2015, I saw it as a great opportunity to improve the arts and art education in Central Iowa.  I developed programs and workshops that would make comic book art fun and accessible to more people and be inviting to the general public.

By January 1st, 2015 we had raised $1200, which allowed us to hand out materials, hold workshops, and sponsor the monthly Drink & Draw with Capes Kafe for TWO YEARS. While it could be considered a success, I want to reach more people. So starting this year (2017) I want to focus more on making original content and videos, and using Facebook as the means of distributing material.

Right now I am editing some of the first videos. They were shot on a cell phone and are of a good enough quality to show people basic tasks in illustration, design, and cosplay. If the budget allows it, I may swetich to more high definition video and audio... but my main goal is to create more content to show my community and the world on how awesomely nerdy and beautiful it can be.

Additional funding helps keep things going. From buying lights for the Drink & Draw so artists can have more dramatic lighting, to buying supplies for outreach programs, to buying materials needed to continue to produce videos.  Your donation is needed and greatly appreciated.

Today is my birthday and if there's one wish I could make... it's a wish to not do fundraising today. But to make #NerdArtEd successful... that's just not in the cards at the moment!

We are at the point where the budget is pushed. Some of the preparation for videos were made on a shoestring budget in hopes that nothing would go wrong... which, of course they did. Plus we added live streaming to our Facebook page and we need to invest more into that. Finally, we need to get the website started so people who don't use Facebook can still benefit.

$300 in 5 days may seem like a stretch, but it's what's needed by the next Drink & Draw next Thursday, May 18. And it's not too difficult if we break it down. $10 from 30 people and it's done.

Can't make a donation? Not a problem your support means a lot to me. Will you help me get the word out?

Hey folks! We're gearing up for some exciting stuff. Starting tomorrow (May 11) our Drink & Draw events will be going LIVE on the internet. At 7pm CST you can do some life drawing from your home.

Going LIVE is something that we weren't planning originally, but it's great for promotion of our programs and to get more people involved. I am hoping to raise $300 in the next week to continue to improve the look of the broadcast including new signs and prop pieces. I am providing new stuff for the broadcast on the 11th, but we also have shows on the 18th and the 25th of May!

Also, there will be some limited drawing paper for the Drink & Draw on the 11th and 18th in honor of Wizard World Des Moines (May 19-21)

30 people with $10. That's all it will take in the next week!!!

Draw a custom Wizard cover!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who kept #NerdArtEd going in my absence. When you do fundraising, it's so easy to focus on the negative (i.e. "why isn't the goal met?") but it's great to have the support of those who also feel that the fundamentals of art should be accessible to all.

Where do we stand? Currently shooting video for comic book page layouts, reshooting the Ames Lettering Guide video (now with WAAAAY better lighting) , and scripted a video for using Pepakura. Files have been set up for the Iron Man and the T-60 videos. Also plans on shooting a video on how to make a comic book (that can be sold on the internet) for under $10 (really!) at a dollar store.

FUNDRAISING!!!
I would like to see us get to $2400 by April 21st. That's 86 five dollar donations... 43 ten dollar donations... or 22 TWENTY DOLLAR DONATIONS. That will allow Nerd Art Education to team up with IOWA COSPLAY to do some really amazing projects and reach audiences that we may not otherwise be able to reach.

Again, thank you everyone for what you have done.

-Sean

Hello everyone in Nerd Art Education and Sean Eikeland! Today this project is being taken over by me, STEVE, and I hope that you all will be better because of it. JK!!!

I think that this project is important because I would have loved to have had something like this growing up in rural West Virginia. I don't cosplay so much, but it would have been nice to know that there is more to drawing comics than just "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way".

Anyway, I don't do fundraising stuff, but I wanted to put in my two cents worth. Check it.
