STOP THE GANGMASTER SYSTEM, HELPING SIKHS SOLD INTO SLAVE LABOUR - [ITALIAN TEXT BELOW]
In the Agro Pontino area, a few miles from Rome, there is a whole army of 30,000 labourers working in the fields for over 12 hours a day and paid 4 Euro per hour.
These are Sikh Indian workers who are being treated as slaves, with no rights; intimidated, beaten and suffering violence of all kinds. These labourers are being exploited by Italian and Indian gangmasters hired by unscrupulous companies.
The gangmaster system (CAPORALATO) is organized, structured, and often managed using mafia-like methods aimed specifically at the exploitation of labourers, who have to work in the fields and greenhouses at excessive speed with no breaks, obliged to call their employer “master”, and forced to take drugs to overcome fatigue.

In Migrazione works every day to support the workers, keeping them informed and accompanying them to obtain their rights and report their exploitative status, with the assistance of the police and magistrates.
This is a situation, which must not continue, but we cannot manage it on our own. So many of you, over the years, have provided moral support and respect, and today we are asking you for a contribution so that we can ensure the Sikh Community has the help it needs.
All the funds collected will be used to set up a travelling centre of information, advice and accompaniment to the services available, with the aim of providing, with the help of cultural intermediaries, free support to the labourers in the essential needs of everyday life, starting with matters of health and safety.
In addition, a free legal assistance service will be set up with the collaboration of expert lawyers, who will be able to help the labourers, especially on matters linked to resisting illegal working practices and exploitation in the fields.
Regular updates will be published on this page and on our website regarding our goals and the ways the funds are being used.

C’è un esercito di 30.000 braccianti nel Pontino, a pochi chilometri da Roma, che lavora nei campi oltre 12 ore al giorno per 4 euro l’ora, obbligati a chiamare “padrone” il datore di lavoro, costretti ad assumere sostanze dopanti per resistere alla fatica (vedi il nostro dossier di IN MIGRAZIONE).
Sono lavoratori indiani Sikh, trattati come schiavi e senza diritti. Subiscono vessazioni, percosse e violenze di ogni tipo. Sono braccianti sfruttati da caporali italiani ed indiani alle dipendenze di aziende senza scrupoli.
Il CAPORALATO è un sistema organizzato, strutturato, gestito molto spesso con metodi mafiosi ed è finalizzato allo sfruttamento dei lavoratori.
Quella dei Sikh è una comunità pacifica che vive una situazione di isolamento, che non conosce i propri diritti.
Con la nostra Cooperativa IN MIGRAZIONE lavoriamo quotidianamente sul campo sostenendo i lavoratori, informandoli e accompagnandoli alla fruizione dei diritti e nella denuncia delle situazioni di sfruttamento.
È una situazione che non può proseguire oltre, ma da soli non possiamo farcela. In tanti ci avete dimostrato in questi anni supporto morale e stima.

OBIETTIVI DELLA RACCOLTA
Tutti i fondi saranno utilizzati per garantire un progetto inedito e concreto, realizzando la prima unità di strada rurale che possa raggiungere i Sikh direttamente nei campi, nelle case e al tempio per garantire servizi, orientamento ed accompagni.
Un team specializzato formato da un legale, un mediatore culturale e un assistente sociale potranno così:
- informare la comunità Sikh sui propri diritti in Italia e su come concretamente praticarli, evitando che cadano nelle mani di intermediari senza scrupoli (italiani e indiani);
- orientare alla fruizione dei servizi sanitari e sociali, accompagnando direttamente coloro che vivono situazioni più critiche e urgenti;
- fornire un servizio di assistenza legale gratuita per i lavoratori, al fine di denunciare il proprio sfruttamento nei campi, contrastando il lavoro nero e il caporalato.
Forniremo puntualmente un resoconto quantitativo e qualitativo delle attività svolte durante l'intero arco del progetto per documentare quanto realizzato .
