Fences With Wolves 2016

Tax deductible
Hello my name is Jacob Asher, I am a fencer at DC Fencers Club. I have always been interested in wolves and became very interested in the Yellowstone Wolf Project when I visited Yellowstone with my family three years ago. As part of becoming bar mitzvah fouryears ago , I decided to organize a youth fundraising fencing tournament. It has been three years since then and we have raised over Seventeen thousand dollars!

I would like to invite you to participate by sponsoring a youth fencer in a special tournament on Sunday  June 12th, at DC Fencers Club, to raise money for the Yellowstone Wolf Project through the Yellowstone Park Foundation . The Yellowstone Park Foundation gathers information about wolves that have been reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park along with information on bears, elk, bison and many other animals. Wolves were once plentiful in the park, but ranchers had killed them off. The project reintroduced 31 wolves to Yellowstone in 1995-96. There are now 95 tracked wolves in the park, and an estimated 500 total. Wolves have since been taken off the endangered list but they are still at a fraction of their former population.

Wolves play a pivotal role as a predator in the ecosystem. Before the wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, the wild elk population had grown out of control. Wolves can in fact have a massive effect on Yellowstone's ecosystem - even changing the course of rivers! To undertand what I mean check out this video http://blog.ted.com/2014/02/18/video-how-wolves-can-alter-the-course-of-rivers/. Our past fundraising efforts have allowed YPF to support the Yellowstone Wolf Project by raising money to buy tracking collars for the wolves, which cost $2500 for a VHF collar and $5000 for a GPS collar. With our fundraising efforts this year we will help YPF support this project and other projects that study and preserve the incredible wildlife of our first national park.

If you wish to participate, you can pledge any amount for each point scored. Whether your fencer wins or loses the bout, every touch helps. When sponsoring a fencer, please make sure you include your email address on the pledge sheet. At the end of the tournament you will receive an email giving you the total points for your fencer and a link to this page and how to donate. If you don't know any of the youth fencers personally but would like to participate, please email me at [email redacted] and we will assign your pledge to one of the competitors. This would be extremely appreciated because many fencers have trouble finding sponsors.

Please bookmark this page if you are interested in keeping track of my progress toward our fundraising goal. I encourage you to browse the Yellowstone Park Foundation's website to learn more about the Yellowstone Wolf Project and other important programs.
