Féminas: A Gay Trans Queer Indie Documentary Film

My name is Virginia Paguaga Lopez, I am a Filmmaker from Nicaragua. This is my first crowdfunding campaign and I am humbled and moved by the idea of you being part of a  community of people who helps to complete the filming and postproduction of my first full-length documentary film “Feminas”, which I have been independently researching and filming for over the past 3 years. It is important to me that my work remains independent and that it is developed and accomplished on the basis of community participation. Being abundantly aware as I am that there are priorities we must tackle as a country, I do believe the most significant changes can be achieved through art. For this very reason I take to documentary filmmaking to record history, preserve living memory and analyze our reality as a means to learning from it. About the Project (Versión en Español abajo) Is a full-length documentary led by the need to explore and understand the world of homosexual, transvestite, queer and transgender people in Nicaragua, particularly focusing on the voices of those from underprivileged and marginalized socioeconomic backgrounds. The film is a profoundly personal exploration - from a Central American, intersectional feminist and decolonial stance, of homosexual, queer and transgender relationships and their spaces for socialization. The current provisions for making art in Nicaragua and Central America are very limited. The Region faces a difficult socio-political and economic crisis that limits joy, freedom and life itself. But for dissident communities it has always been so, from long ago, and for this very reason, now more than ever, producing this film is a pure act of resistance, struggle and dignified rebellion. Where we are Research and filming has been ongoing for the past three years. So far we have footage for 70% of the feature. We are now gearing towards the post-production, which includes the mounting, sound design, animation, color and promotion and projection of the film. As part of post-production we aim to organize a cabaret event with members of the LGBTQI+ community and the people from the county were most of the filming takes place, as a means to celebrate life with the conviction that love and joy are our strongest forms of resistance. The Story Feminas tells the story of homosexuals, effeminate queers and a transgender woman that by way of their life story lead us into the world of ‘las locas’ (effeminate queers), ‘las maricas’ (the gays), ‘los raritos’ (the queer). The documentary highlights those voices further marginalized due to their social class and race. The dialogue unearths memories of ‘La Sebastiana’, the most renowned and remembered homosexual of the old – pre-1972 earthquake - Managua. What we need (How can you help) Let’s be honest, it takes more than passion to make a film. Despite having already many key elements in motion, public funds currently available in Nicaragua for film production are virtually non-existent, making the production of a full-length feature even more of a long and arduous task. Palo Audiovisual has financed all the work up to this point, but we know that with further financial backing the work will be much more fluid. Although ‘Feminas’ is a low-budget independent film, we need the support of friends to make it happen. Each dollar (and share) counts towards making this the best film it can be! Starring La Sebastiana Revered as the oldest homosexual in Managua, with incomparable grace and elegance, he paraded the streets of the old city, of which only vestiges remain. I love sunsets, life’s details, the scent of books, drinking coffee. I tend to be very fragile, although people see me as strong. I like vibrant colours and sepia tones, I am an extremist. I detest hypocrisy, people who use others, opportunistic people, injustice." Waldir Ruíz (León, 1988) Gender and Queer Communities Social Researcher. Holds a BA Philology and Social Communication from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, UNAN-Managua, and is a Candidate of the MA in Social Science with mention in Social Policies by the University of Cordoba, UNC, Argentina. Since 2010 he has worked as a Communicator and Researcher for several civil-society organizations in Nicaragua and participated as a feminist activist within several projects promoting the rights of women and the LGBTQ community. In 2012 he won first prize in the journalist’s essay contest “Conchita Palacios” organised by IPAS Central America, with a reflective piece in favor of the decriminalization of therapeutic abortion in Nicaragua. He has written and published “queer poetry” and his work was featured as part of the poetry anthology “Videopoetica”, an audiovisual Project merging poetry and visual work by central american women.   Franklin Hooker Solano "My name is Franklin Hooker, homosexual, Nicaraguan, women’s rights and sexual diversity activist. I am 28. I came into this world thanks to the midwifery skills of my mother Conchita, my maternal grandmother. I grew up and live in Managua. I am a philologist and communicator by profession, with a Masters in Gender and Development. " "One of my strategies for coping with the emotional grief I am working through - daily discrimination, the socio-political climate of the country and grey days ahead, has been to build a green space within the backyard of my house. The contact with soil and plants has become a form of therapy. “Sow to grow” is one of the thoughts that accompany me through this form of resistance."  La Shakira "I never come out of the closet, because I was never in it. I am from the Sabana Grande Region and I am the most famous homosexual in my hometown. I was one of the first to cross-dress and I was never ashamed. If you ask for me by legal name, no one knows who I am, but if you say “La Shakira”, you will certainly find me. I always worked in the tax-free zone, but now I manage a bar."   Lala "I don’t care if people label me ‘him’ or ‘her’, I like modeling and makeup. I was crowned Miss Gay Sabana Grande. I work as a waitress in a bar with La Shakira." Edward López "I am a contemporary dancer, a makeup artist and I study Social Communication. I live in the city of Juigalpa and it is difficult being gay in such a sexist city with cowboys everywhere. I like fake eyelashes and long nails. Contemporary dance makes me more aware of my body. I am passionate about movement." Mistica "I am a 41 year old Nicaraguan transgender person, a stylist and a transgender rights activist. I like working with the community and run Zumba classes for the women of my neighbourhood." Versión en Español “Féminas” -  Un largometraje documental independiente de Virginia Paguaga  Soy Virginia Paguaga López, Comunicadora Social y Cineasta nicaragüense. Es la primera vez que estoy creando una campaña de crowdfunding y me emociona mucho la idea de que ustedes me ayuden a terminar la filmación y postproducción de mi primer largometraje documental “Féminas” que tengo 3 años de estar investigando y filmando. Hacer cine en Nicaragua no es fácil, estoy clara que son otras las prioridades que nos urgen resolver como país, pero yo le apuesto a que los cambios más significativos se pueden hacer a través del arte. Y por lo mismo mi apuesta por el cine documental para guardar la historia, conservar la memoria viva y analizar nuestra realidad para aprender de ella. Es por esto que necesito de su apoyo para hacer realidad esta nueva película nicaragüense. Acerca del Proyecto  Féminas, es un largometraje documental que nace de la necesidad de explorar y entender  el universo homosexual, travesti, cuir y transgénero de Nicaragua; específicamente escucha  las voces de aquellas personas pertenecientes a la clase social no privilegiada y marginada del país. La película es una mirada profundamente personal de las relaciones homosexuales, cuir y transgénero y de los espacios usados para la socialización. Desde una perspectiva centroamericana, feminista interseccional y decolonial. Las disposiciones para hacer arte en Nicaragua y Centroamérica son limitadas actualmente. La región atraviesa una fuerte crisis sociopolítica y económica  que limita la existencia misma de la vida, la risa y la libertad. Pero para las personas disidentes siempre ha sido así, desde mucho antes, por eso más que nunca producir esta película es un acto puro de resistencia, lucha y digna rebeldía. Dónde estamos Durante tres años hemos estado filmando e investigando, en este momento estamos en 70% para terminar la filmación. Seguido de eso comenzamos la etapa de post-producción lo cual incluye el montaje de la película, el diseño sonoro, las animaciones, colorización y la divulgación y proyección  de la película. De este modo también queremos realizar una fiesta cabaret con artistas de la comunidad LGBTQI+, y con personas de la comarca donde la película fue mayormente filmada, para celebrar la vida, porque creemos profundamente que el amor y la alegría es nuestra resistencia. La historia Féminas narra la historia de  homosexuales, cuir afeminados y una mujer transgénero  que nos adentran a través de sus vidas al universo de las “locas” “las maricas” y los “raritos”. En el documental resaltan las voces marginadas y discriminadas por su clase y raza. Es un diálogo que desentierra la memoria del homosexual más reconocido y recordado de la vieja  Managua “La Sebastiana”. Personajes La Sebastiana El homosexual más viejo de Managua. Tenía un garbo y elegancia inigualable, salía por las calles de aquella vieja ciudad de la que hoy apenas vestigios quedan. Iba a “El Charco de los patos”, donde incluso cautivó con sus ojos azules a uno de los hijos de Luis Somoza Debayle: Bernabé, de quien se rumora era homosexual. David Rocha Cortez  (Managua, Nicaragua- 1990)  Titiritero, actor, narrador oral escénico, crítico teatral e investigador cultural.  “Una vez me dijeron: ‘David vos sos tan impredecible como el mar’. Me considero una persona apasionada, testaruda, sensible, sencilla. Soy loca y afrodescendiente, amante de la ciudad de Managua a la que he dedicado una buena parte de mi tiempo y mi escritura. Me considero intempestivo, a veces impredecible, un poco dramático, me encanta hacer reír a las personas. No disfruto de la soledad, me gusta bailar y también disfruto de una buena lectura, de conversar y debatir. Me encantan los atardeceres, los detalles de la vida, oler los libros, tomar café. A veces suelo ser muy frágil, aunque las personas me ven muy fuerte. Me gustan los colores vibrantes y los sepias, soy extremista. Detesto la hipocresía, la gente que utiliza a los demás, las personas oportunistas, la injusticia.” Waldir Ruíz León, 1988. Investigador Social en temas relacionados al género y comunidades queer. Candidato al grado de Magíster en Ciencias Sociales con mención en Políticas Sociales por la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, UNC, Argentina. Licenciado en Filología y Comunicación Social por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua, UNAN- Managua. Desde el 2010 se ha desempeñado como comunicador e investigador para distintas organizaciones de sociedad civil en Nicaragua y ha participado como activista feminista en distintos proyectos a favor de los derechos humanos de las mujeres y la comunidad LGBT. En 2012 obtuvo el primer lugar en el concurso de ensayo periodístico “Conchita Palacios” que organiza IPAS Centroamérica con un trabajo reflexivo a favor de la despenalización del aborto terapéutico en Nicaragua.  Ha escrito y publicado “poesía marica”, siendo parte en 2017 de la antología poética “VideoPoética”, un proyecto audiovisual que lleva a imágenes poesía de mujeres centroamericanas. Franklin Hooker Solano “Mi nombre es Franklin Hooker, homosexual, nicaragüense, activista por la defensa de derechos de las mujeres y de la diversidad sexual. Tengo 28 años. Me asomé al mundo gracias a las labores de partera de mi mama Conchita, mi abuela materna. Crecí y vivo en Managua. De profesión soy filólogo y comunicador con estudios de maestría en perspectivas género y desarrollo.” “Una de mis estrategias de afrontamiento ante los duelos emocionales que proceso: la discriminación cotidiana, la situación política y social del país y días que pintan grises, ha sido construirme un espacio verde en el patio de mi casa. El contacto con la tierra y con las plantas ha significado una forma de hacer terapia. ‘Sembrar para sanar’ es uno de los pensamientos que me acompañan desde esta forma de resistencia.” La Shakira “Nunca estuve en el closet así que nunca tuve que salir de el. Soy de la comarca Sabana Grande y soy el homosexual más famoso de mi pueblo. Yo fui de los primeros en vestirme como mujer y nunca me dio pena. Si le preguntas a la gente por mi nombre no me conocen, pero si decís “La Shakira” por supuesto que das conmigo. Siempre he trabajado en zona franca, pero ahora administro un bar.” Lala “No me importa que me digan él o ella, me gusta el modelaje y el maquillaje. Tengo la corona de Miss Gay Sabana Grande, trabajo como mesera en un bar con la Shakira.”   Edward López “Soy bailarín de danza contemporánea, maquillista y estudio Comunicación Social, vivo en la ciudad de Juigalpa y es difícil ser gay en una ciudad tan machista llena de vaqueros por todos lados. Me gustan las pestañas postizas y las uñas largas. La danza me hace tener más conciencia de mi cuerpo, me apasiona el movimiento.” Mística “Soy una persona transgénera nicaragüense de 41 años de edad, estilista y activista de derechos humanos para personas transgéneras.
