Cornerstone Food Bank

Cornerstone Food Bank is the creation of our founding director, Becky Todhunter, a very special person who inspires those around her. When Becky was growing up her mother, who had a passion for taking care of the needy, fed the hoboes who came to their family farm. Even after being stricken with multiple sclerosis, Becky’s mother continued to reach out to others in need. Becky has never forgotten her mother’s example and has continued serving those who are experiencing hardship.

From the time she had a home of her own Becky would pick up extra food when she heard of people in need in the community. By 2002, Becky realized that the informal food pantry she was running had outgrown her garage. She transferred it to a church in a lower income neighborhood near Broadway in Englewood, and Cornerstone Food Bank was born using donated refrigerators and freezers and volunteer labor. At first Cornerstone served an average of 15 people a week, but information about the food bank spread quickly by word-of-mouth and the number of clients grew steadily. Cornerstone currently assists about 80 families (300 people) a week; serving a light meal and providing a generous box of nutritious food (including fresh produce and meat) for them to take home to prepare meals for their families

Cornerstone Food Bank offers a vital service in our community. Unlike some other local food banks, we do not have residency requirements, nor do we limit the number of times a family can use our services. We recognize that if a family is economically disadvantaged and struggling, family members will be hungry every day, not just once a month (which is the limit imposed at some other food banks).

100% of all donations goes towards direct client services: purchasing, transporting, and distributing food to people living with food insecurity. We pay less than $.10/pound of food. This means that a $50 donation allows us to purchase over $500 pounds of food, enough to give 25 families a generous box of nutritious food.

Here is what some of our clients are telling us in their own words:

–  Had to retire early and with rent increase, don’t have much money left for food. What we get from Cornerstone Food Bank will help stretch our money.

–  My name is Jonathan and I am disabled. My wife is in between jobs. Currently I have 6 children that eat a lot.

–  My husband’s job was outsourced to Honduras and he was laid off. He went back to school to do a job change and has not been able to find substantial, permanent income. He is working stocking at Target but it is not bringing in enough to make ends meet.

–  Lost my job and have no income to speak of. Recently diagnosed with cancer. Anything helps. Thank you.

Cornerstone is there when people in the community need help feeding their families. These past few years we have seen rising levels of food insecurity with an increasing number of families suddenly unemployed living in a precarious zone between self-sufficiency and want, with insufficient income for their basic needs. Cornerstone Food Bank provides a safety net to help feed those who are most vulnerable in our community: children in low income families, the elderly, the disadvantaged, immigrants, and the homeless. The more food we can give to these families, the more resources can be freed up to pay for other needs such as rent, medication, heating bills, and gas to get to work.

Help us feed the overlooked and underfed.  You can find out more information about us by visiting our website: http://cornerstonefoodbank.com/
