AN OPEN LETTER:

Dear federal workers and members of our military,

As we hit day 35 of the government shutdown, and your second missed paycheck, our hearts are with you and your families during this incredibly difficult time. As former federal employees ourselves, we know first-hand how tough your jobs can be, and that no one enters public service to get rich. Many of us lived paycheck to paycheck during our time as public servants, and not being paid could have meant disaster for us and those who depend on us. And you’re not alone: two thirds of Americans have less than a thousand dollars in savings.

We were horrified to learn that Commerce Secretary Ross couldn’t understand why so many federal workers need the assistance of food banks during the shutdown. It shouldn’t be impossible for someone worth $700 million to understand the realities of life for a working family, and it certainly shouldn’t be impossible for the United States Commerce Secretary to understand this basic concept. Yet here we are. The entire administration has put a border wall—that we don’t need, an idea that was created more as a slogan than a policy proposal—over the well-being of the 800,000 federal workers across the country going without pay.

We know that many of you still show up to work despite the lack of a paycheck and uncertainty over when that will change. You’re keeping our country safe and continuing to serve, even as the White House has abdicated its position of leadership. And for those who have not been allowed to work, we know you’re eager to get back. You are public servants in every sense of the words.

We the undersigned stand by you, and want to say thank you for your service. This campaign will directly fund the existing Government Shutdown Relief Fund GoFundMe and acts as a place where we can galvanize other alumni and donate together. The Direct Impact Fund is a 501(c)(3) which will distribute funds raised to nonprofit organizations across the country that are offering general relief to government workers. We encourage our fellow federal employee alumni (of all political persuasions) to give, if they haven’t already. Our former coworkers deserve better.

Sincerely,

Molly Dillon - The White House, 2013 - 2017

Lisa Kurdziel - US Senate & US House 2005 - 2009

Vivian Graubard - The White House, 2011 - 2016

Kara DeFrias - The White House and 18F, 2015 - 2017
