Who am I?
My name is Paul Maguire and I live in Dundalk, one of the largest towns in Ireland. I’m a single dad to 2 kids with amazing personalities and lots of love to give.
In 2017 I was diagnosed with depression and lost my job. Yet despite the negative connotations this may have, it has allowed me to devote more of my time with the two lights of my life, something which I was not previously able to do. There is liberation in the weirdest places sometimes.
What it has also allowed me to do is think, write and try to develop a means of fighting the rise of fervent racism and hatred in Ireland and society in general. From these thoughts, Feck News was born. I used to write a lot in the past and believe now is the best time to focus on my ability to be creative.
What is Feck News?
I created Feck News in December 2017 as a Facebook page to highlight and comment on the tide of rising populism and white nationalism in Ireland and the world in general. Playing with the Irish word “Feck” and the word “Fake”, made popular by Donald Trump, Feck News aims to do 3 things:
1. Poke fun at those in power who are gradually eroding all what we would regard as decent and humane in society through fear and lies,
2. Raise the awareness that extreme right-wing views are growing in Ireland and this needs to stop and
3. To provide humour and a little entertainment in our lives whilst dealing with the issues above.
Traditional and social media is awash at the moment with a growing lack of empathy and compassion for those less well off than ourselves and for those seeking asylum from military bombardment.
Right-wing views and actions are increasing rapidly and I believe we can try to fight this through providing an alternative view to what’s becoming worryingly popular these days.
When you are fighting depression on a daily basis, it’s good to have an outlet to express yourself and Feck News is my weapon of choice. It gives me the hope that I can make a difference and try to make the world a better, more compassionate place for my kids to grow up into. Now is the time to expand and turn it into something for the greater good for as many people as possible.
How I aim to achieve this.
In order to expand Feck News to a wider audience I wish to create a fully-fledged website dedicated to promoting my message by providing entertaining commentary and content, interspersed with serious subject matter and discussion.
I purchased the domain name “fecknews.com” at the same time I started the Facebook page but, due to the financial pressures of being an unemployed single parent, am unable to meet the costs of hosting Feck News. This is why I am reaching out to you all for some invaluable support to start the ball rolling.
In the longer term, I aim to create and publish my own audio and video content and will have costs relating to that but, for now, I want to learn how to walk before I can run when it comes to online media and publication.
GOAL
To meet the costs associated with the above, my initial goal is to raise 300 euro.
This will cover hosting fees with a recognised website provider such as Wix, Wordpress.com or Squarespace as well as the associated website security costs and SSL certificates. It may even allow me to invest in some image editing software which will help enhance the written word as well as improve the visual quality of the website.
I believe the longer we wait to provide a sane, alternative view to the bigots and hate-mongers in our midst, we may pass the point of no return.
It’s extremely frustrating to have all these ideas in my head and not being able to fund the means of getting them out there. All I can do now is ask for your support, in any shape or form, to turn Feck News into a vibrant and powerful reality.
