To visitors from all over the world, Monteverde, Costa Rica seems like paradise. It is a small town at the edge of the cloud forest - a rare and precious ecosystem - whose primary industries are tourism, dairy farming, and coffee farming. Guests encounter spectacular views and diverse wildlife, and enjoy a peaceful escape from city life.
To the Costa Rican teenagers who join our musical theatre productions, Monteverde is a home they love and appreciate, but also a place that feels isolated and restrictive. Because of the geographical separation between Monteverde and Costa Rica’s major cities, teens here do not have the same opportunities that exist in other parts of the country. There is one small public high school, a technical school where they can choose to pursue careers such as accounting and eco-tourism. This setting is especially difficult for kids who don’t fit the mold.
Far Corners Community Musical Theatre brings theatre to students who would not otherwise experience it, allowing them to explore cultural boundaries, and find a voice in a like-minded community. In past productions students have explored life in the barrios of New York City, the hardships of the French Revolution, and the struggle for survival in a London orphanage. It is this ability to escape into the settings and characters of the shows that allows students to develop a worldview of life outside Monteverde. It also provides them the opportunity to become independent, responsible, and a more active member in their own community, as well as our global community.
In order to offer a musical theatre program in Monteverde in 2019, we must raise at least $7000 by the end of 2018. This includes one-time individual contributions through this GoFundMe site as well as our own site , and recurring monthly donations via our website . Please help us keep this beautiful community tradition alive.
