Hello!
My name is Fatoumata Diallo and I am a junior at Wheaton College (MA). I am a Anthropology major with a double minor in Education and Asian Studies. I am asking for help on funding my year abroad to Japan and Denmark and help the cause I am passionately invested. in.
As a first generation college student I have experinced many challeneges in my life that I had to over come from fighting against sterotypes, and statistics, and bullying to get to the place I am at now. I personally got the chance to be in a supportive school and join programs that gave me mentors who have been my support system, however not every student of color is lucky as I was. Over my academic year aborad I will be conducting my study on education policy outside of the U.S. I aim to look into both education policies and cultural factors that effect the countries' students of color's educations. I noticed from doing educational programs such as Breakthrough New York and Boston, low income students of color in middle school need a great deal of support to fight against being another statistic. The children that make it to high school and enter programs like Posse, Minds Matter, and Opportunity Net ect. had support through those tough times. I am to spread that support so we have more students of color achieving for greatness. My study abroad is the start of my larger pursuit of changing America educational policies and helping non profit organizations to better support their sholars. However, I need help to pay for the little things that when they come together become too much for my family to pay. All your proceeds will be covering for expenses listed below.
I made a rough budget of
Emergencies- $1500
Rent - $690*8 (Help host family in Japan per month (fall), and dorm rent in Denmark (spring).
Food (staple) - $100*8
Fun times - $1000
National health insurance (compulsory) - $100*2
Transportation - $1500
I have some school refunds that will cover the some of these but all the help I can get will be greatly appreciated.
