Keeping Families Together

Joy's Family Promise Story
Joy and her 5-year-old daughter were in crisis, facing eviction from their apartment. Frantic, scared, and with nowhere else to go for help, Joy contacted Family Promise. Within a few days, Joy and Tala had a safe place to stay along with meals provided by kind volunteers. Family Promise staff assisted in securing daycare arrangements so Joy could continue to work her various part-time jobs and search for steadier employment. Local professionals provided personal finance education. Volunteers and staff threw a birthday party for Tala that included a backpack and school supplies as she began kindergarten.

Joy and Tala entered the Family Promise program in mid-August of 2018. Less than two months later, Joy had gained regular employment, new skills, and enough savings to look for a new place to live. With help of matching funds from a family member, Joy was able to purchase a home. She is a first-time homeowner thanks to Family Promise and the support of volunteers and donors from our community.

About Us
Family Promise of Albany County is a local affiliate of a national organization that has  a successful model of serving children and families experiencing homelessness.

Children and their families are provided with safe shelter, meals, and customized services to achieve sustainable living. Existing organizations and hundreds of volunteers donate building space, meals and time. For every $1 received, Family Promise receives $3 of donated goods and services.  This means your donation has a HUGE impact.

Our Families
Joy's family was our first to graduate. Another family, described on our website, came to Laramie after being displaced from their Florida home because of Hurricane Michael. They also graduated (mom, dad, two children)!

We are currently serving one family, which includes a single mom and her children who are 7, 5, and 4 years old.

Why We Serve
* Children experiencing homelessness are 34 times more likely than their peers to enter foster care.

* Each additional child who enters foster care costs the community $60,000.

* Children in homeless situations are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses, anxiety, and depression; experience developmental delays; drop out of school; and witness violence.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
