A family left destitute by fire.

Donation protected
The Congolese family of Paul Kiese, Marthine and their 5 children lost everything on March 24th, 2017 when their apartment caught fire in the east of Montreal.  Living very modestly as day workers on factory assembly lines, they did not have the means to pay for insurance.  For the time being, social services are offering the family a hotel room.  Beyond that, they have barely anything left to their name.

Adding to their burden, they were paying 500 CAD a month for the rent of an organisation in Congo-Kinshasa that is dear to their heart, GPAJ.  GPAJ is an education center started by Paul 17 years ago. It helps illiterate teenagers and downtrodden youth escape the spiral of poverty.

Please help us gather the money to pay a year’s rent for GPAJ, which would relieve the pressure on the Kiese family. We also want to find the funds so that Paul and Marthine can secure their materiel needs in this moment of crisis.

More details

My wife and I encountered the Kiese family in Congo 13 years ago in the context of a project we did on the development and support of fair trade.  We have personally worked in collaboration with the GPAJ center. It is a wonderful initiative where teenagers living in the streets, teen mothers and poor young people in general learn to read, to write while also acquiring a trade so to pull themselves out of their misery.  Many young people who have beneficiated from support today have their own families and jobs.  This is what has encouraged Paul to not give up despite his own financial struggles and despite the distance. This purely Congolese project occasionally receives funding and European visitors. The money then goes to salaries, materials, computers, instruments of machinery. Many of those involved in GPAJ are volunteers.

We wish to gather 6000 CAD to pay the GPAJ rent (500 CAD x 12) which would relieve the pressure on the Kiese family, and we are also hoping to gather at least 5000 CAD to cover the expenses caused by the fire.

If you would like more details, do not hesitate to communicate with me by email.

Thank you for taking the time to read our plea.
