Lava Took Our Homes, Land, & Apiary

Our family recently lost our land and homes to the lava flow from fissure 8 in Puna.  Our land was also the home of our business Paradise Nectar Apiaries.  We had 6.5 acres of macadamia orchard consisting of over 140 trees producing macadamia nuts.  The lava took out the road to our homestead, our hanai mama's homestead, all of our structures and completely covered the land.  Now that we have the closure that our homestead is gone it is time to move on and start over.
We were able to save most of our bees.  Unfortunately, we lost most of our beekeeping equipment, tools, and 5 hives with bees in them.
We also lost our solar system, truck, dishwasher, furniture, homeschooling supplies, and most basic household items.  We were able to save some of our big appliances though, and most importantly ourselves.
We are currently renting a house in HPP and have set up 3 bee yards for our hives.  John has set up his workshop at one of our bee yards so we are trying to maintain business as much as possible.  All of our hives have experienced a bit of a set back but we have enough honey from the harvests we got when evacuating the bees to sustain us and maintain honey sales for a little while.  We are grateful for what we still have.
We are in need of a reliable truck so we can keep up with our hives and keep our bees healthy, and be ready to move more hives if needed.   We are calling in a long term work trade situation or rent to own opportunity.  We are farmers and we need a place to grow food and bees.  We are most interested in the Hamakua coast and would like to relocate there.
Due to the lava activity we have lost all of our consistent income.  All of the hives we maintain are in areas that have been covered in lava or isolated and due to the road blocks and restricted use of the roads we are unable to access them at this time.  We are open to taking on new hives to maintain for those who are unable to do so.  We are sad to see our time at Kalani and the bee program we established come to an end.  The hives live on, but we will miss the workshops and hive time there.   We are grateful for the financial support that Kalani brought into our lives and will miss that as well.
We appreciate any support you wish to give at this time.  May it be a hug, kind words, financial support, anything positive and encouraging during this transitional time, we greatly appreciate your help.
This is very humbling for our family since we strive to be sustainable and self-sufficient in every way.  We were living our dreams and providing for ourselves on our land, and we know we will return there soon and pick up where we left off.29932156_15265155120_r.jpeg

Mahalo for your continued support as we get through these challenging changes and losses. We appreciate your help and love. It really means a lot. More big changes are coming as we transition to our new home & land in Wainaku, on August 3rd. Our main needs right now are home furnishings, school supplies, clothing for the children, and a truck. Every little bit helps as we embark upon this new chapter in our lives. Starting over again isn't easy, but you have helped us make it a little easier. Thank you, & we love you!

Really missing farm life right now. I miss working with our bees and homeschooling on the same day, in the same place. I miss being able to work at home and being outside most of the time. I miss harvesting bountiful baskets of food from our gardens and eating the food we grew from seed. I miss my life. I miss my neighbors and friends. There is so much to miss.. I look forward to new beginnings but right now I feel stuck and sad. I like our rental house and life is generally great but we know our time here is short since the house is on the market. I have learned to accept and surrender in all ways to this experience. I cried so much at first I got a clogged tear duct and now have a huge bump under my right eye. Everyday I look in the mirror and remember evacuating my home & land on mother's day and the sadness I felt knowing it would be a long time before we returned. To work so hard to build a beautiful homestead just to rip it apart in a week is something I hope to never do again in my life. We are so grateful for all of you who have helped us. We appreciate your continued support as we find our new homestead and rebuild our dreams.
This experience has been especially hard on our children. We are desiring to enroll them in some fun classes like dance and acting in Hilo to get their minds off all of this instability in our lives. We greatly appreciate any donations towards their schooling.
While there were many things we lost and there is so much to get to rebuild we are most in need of a work truck since we lost ours in the lava. We have been blessed to borrow one at this time which is making business possible. We look forward to having our own reliable truck soon so we can continue to meet the islands beekeeping needs.
Thank you for you love, support, and enthusiasm. You have helped to heal our souls and nourished our hearts. We are grateful and we love you.

Lava is flowing down the road to our house right now. Please pray that our home, macadamia trees, and 5 hives left there are safe.
