False killer whale research
[PT] O meu nome é Guilherme Estrela. Estudei biologia marinha e vivo nos Açores, um arquipélago no centro do oceano Atlântico. Aqui, podemos observar uma espécie rara de golfinhos - a falsa orca - espécie essa que estou determinado a estudar.
[EN] My name is Guilherme Estrela and I studied marine biology. I live in the Azores, an oceanic archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Here, we can observe a very illusive species of dolphin - the false killer whale - a species that I'm determined to study.
[PT] A falsa-orca é um parente da orca que pode atingir os 6 metros de comprimento. Aqui, nos Açores, estes animais ainda não foram estudados apesar de serem avistados várias vezes por ano; a sua preferência por peixes de grande porte (que as leva a interagirem com artes de pesca) e reprodução lenta (uma cria a cada 4-7 anos) são características que tornam esta espécie especialmente vulnerável.
[EN] False killer whales are relatives of the orca and can grow up to 6 meters. Here, in the Azores, these animals have not yet been studied even though they are sighted several times a year; their preference for game fish (which often results in interactions with fisheries) and slow reproductive rate (a calf every 4 to 7 years) make them especially vulnerable.
[PT] Por isso, de modo a perceber um pouco melhor a sua presença nas nossas águas, iniciei um projecto de investigação com alguns colegas que envolve também operadores turísticos de observação de cetáceos com o objectivo de recolher dados sobre estes animais. Hoje em dia, utilizando apenas uma câmera fotográfica DSRL, conseguimos fotografar e catalogar a barbatana dorsal de cada indivíduo; um processo chamado de "Foto-ID". Estes dados podem ser utilizados para , entre outros, estimar quantos indivíduos existem, para onde se deslocam, quais as espécies que predam e averiguar o estado atual da população. Possíveis ferimentos causados por artes de pesca podem também ser documentados através desta técnica.
[EN] So, In order to understand their presence in our waters, I started a research project with a few colleagues which also involves whale watching operators to gather data on the Azorean false killer whales. Nowadays, using only a DSLR camera, we are able to photograph and catalog the individuals' dorsal fins to identify them; a process called Photo-ID. This data can be used to estimate how many individuals exist, where they go to and how the populations are faring. Injuries caused by fisheries can also be documented through pictures. 
[PT] Os dados que estão a ser analisados trouxeram algumas descobertas acerca deste animais, no entanto, estamos limitados aos dados recebidos por operadores turísticos. O acesso a uma câmera iria permitir uma recolha autónoma de dados, o que aceleraria o processo de uma forma tremenda. Apesar de as falsas-orcas serem o foco principal da nossa pesquisa, quaisquer fotografias úteis de outras espécies serão partilhadas com outros investigadores de modo a colaborar na investigação geral. Para tal, estamos a tentar angariar fundos para obter uma câmera DSLR com uma lente apropriada para o projecto.
[EN] The data that is being analyzed has shed some light into their lives, but we are only working with pictures from tour operators. If we had a camera of our own, we would also be able to get data, which would speed up this process tremendously. As we're mostly interested in false killer whales, pictures from other species would be shared with leading researchers in order to assist in their research. So, we're trying to raise funds in order to obtain a DSLR camera with appropriate lens for the project.
