Hello,
My name is Adrian Herrera. I am a teacher in the South Side of Milwaukee and also the founder of the program, Fades For Grades MKE. It is due to my passion for education, , closing the gap for youth of color and fighting for the betterment of the South Side community, and other communities like ours, that I am developing this program. However, in order to do so successfully, I need your help!
Our mission is to help young men of color, especially those growing up in challenging circumstances, to recognize their full potential and self-worth by fostering positive relationships through strong male role models.
Many of Milwaukee’s children grow up with few adult males in their lives; some without any. Research has shown that a positive male role model has endless benefits for a child’s development and well-being. Studies show that children with male role models do better in school, have higher self-esteem, are more goal-oriented, practice greater self-control and are less likely to be involved in criminal activity. (First Things First, 2017). Growing up on the South Side of Milwaukee myself, I did not always have a positive male role model to turn to and I know the every day struggles that a youth of color goes through. It can be very difficult to believe in yourself when it seems no one else does, to strive for what seems to be unattainable goals when no one expects anything of you. To sum it up, a positive male role model can change a child's life and in turn change our community and society as a whole.
We aspire to have every child value hard work and education through fostering positive relationships. We hope that these values will empower students to break through their own challenges and instill change in our community and in the world. In order to accomplish these goals, we have partnered with various barbershops in the Milwaukee area to create the Fades for Grades MKE program. Through these partnerships the young men will have the chance to build a positive relationship with an adult who looks like them, talks like them, and lives in the same community and faces similar everyday struggles. Relationships in the community can help students both demonstrate respect for others and feel respected as responsible individuals. Our young men will experience success and understand that along their journey they will be accompanied by mentors who believe in them every step of the way.
Fades For Grades MKE is offering male students of color a free program providing the opportunity to build positive relationships with supportive male role models, along with the chance to earn fades, haircuts, through improved behavior, academics and attendance.
I am setting up this gofundme page because starting a nonprofit organization does require funds. I am networking as much as possible and have been lucky enough to come across other wonderful entrepreneurs who have been willing to donate their time and efforts to support this cause, but there are still fees that are left to be covered. I am raising money for student member ID cards ($350), backpacks ($75-$200), apparel ($500), nonprofit organization legal start-up fees (anywhere from $1,000-$1,200), transportation fees ($300) and social media ads ($200).
If you want to be part of a change for our community and for our youth please donate. Anything from $1 to $1,000 will be extremely appreciated and can make all the difference in a young child's life. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to positively impact society and I hope that you will feel the same.
