Awnee's Fight against Cancer

On February 1st, 2016 our lives were altered as we knew them. The day started out with a trip to the ER for what looked like a weird rash on her legs and by noon her entire life as she knew it was no longer. Our kind, generous, and extraordinary little Awnee Rose (age 13 years) was diagnosed with Philadelphia Chromosome Positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (Ph+ ALL). This was an unexpected, unwanted, and very traumatic event for Awnee and our entire family of friends. Treatment started immediately as Awnee was transported by ambulance from her local Children’s ER to the main campus in Aurora Colorado. Treatment included several transfusions, surgery to place a “power port” in her chest, an eight day stay, rounds of  IV chemotherapy, daily oral chemotherapy, and a few lumbar punctures with chemotherapy.

Awnee’s out patient road map came to an end after only ten days as she developed two types of bacteria in her blood stream, a horrible intestinal infection, and developed a form of Type I diabetes. She has spent a total of 19 days out 29 as in patient since her diagnoses. She is in her hospital bed fighting for her life. Her body is tired, she is being fed through a tube, and yet she still talked to her teachers during a visit today about her personal suggestions for “battle of the books” next year.  Her strength is admirable by all of us and her personality untouched by this horrible disease. She has a huge support team in place, yet has years ahead of her to battle this cancer.
