Paisley's Medical Expenses

Donation protected
On September 21, 2017, As many of you know Paisley Jean Blackwell was born to Devin and Breana Blackwell in Fort Worth's Harris Methodist hospital with schizencephaly.  Schizencephaly is an extremely rare birth defect. Our Sweet P is 1 in 100,000 babies to be born with it. It causes slits or clefts in the cerebral hemispheres of your brain. These clefts may appear on one or both sides of the brain. The signs & symptoms of schizencephaly include: developmental delay, seizures, abnormally small head (microcephaly), intellectual disability, partial or complete paralysis, poor muscle tone (hypotonia), and hydrocephalus.

At our 20 week sonogram, we were confronted that Paisley may have hydrocephalus, a condition that means there is fluid on her brain. At 21 weeks we meet with a specialist in Abilene who confirmed our fears. The doctor in Abilene worked with us to arrange appointments with Dr. Tabor. Over months of the three doctors coordinating visits between us and information, plans were made to deliver her a 1 month early due to the size of her head. The month prior to delivery, we were seeing a doctor in Brownwood once a week, where afterwards, we would go to Brownwood hospital for a stress test to make sure all was going as planned. Due to concerns at the last stress test where her heartbeat was dropping a little after a contraction would occur, she was born earlier than the arranged date. Her head is bigger in proportion than what it "should" be, but since catching it utero, they have been able to prepare a little better. After Paisley was born, she stayed in the NICU unit at Texas Harris hospital with an unknown discharge date.  Since her body was unable to drain the fluid by itself, her shunt surgery was performed days after she was born. The shunt will allow excess fluid to drain from her brain into her abdomen so that her body can absorb the fluid. She has had to have a feeding tube placed due to her using all her energy to stay warm, she is too tired to eat her bottle most of the time. Even though it is a difficult road, we know God has been so good during our adventure, and has helped comfort our family in the most unique of ways. We ask that you please continue praying and supporting our family during this time. We will provide updates every time we get them! Thank you all so much!
