Injured, paralyzed, and trying to survive.

Eddie Garcia has always prided himself on being self-sufficient and able to take care of his family, no matter what it took. He never shied away from a hard day’s work and was working as a furniture mover in 2018 when he was involved in a car accident while on his way to work.

Eddie was asleep when the accident occurred, but woke up to find himself and the driver critically injured. Eddie was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio since it was the closest major trauma center, but this meant his wife Melly was forced to leave their two young children at home in Austin while she traveled back and forth caring for Eddie and figuring out all of the next steps.

As a result of the accident Eddie is now a paraplegic, unable to stand or walk and must rely on a wheelchair to get around. Before he was released from the hospital Eddie’s family was forced to move out of their apartment and into a new, ground floor unit that Eddie could access. His injury meant that Eddie had to rely on Melly for 100% of his care since without health insurance he wasn’t able to pay for home health, physical therapy or even basic medical equipment.

Eddie has never felt like a victim though and his unwavering positive attitude impresses all who meet him. In fact Eddie returned to a desk job as soon as his rehab allowed in order to care for his family. Unfortunately, every time Eddie and Melly turn around they are hit with another obstacle. They’ve always managed to find a way up, over or around the obstacle but their luck is running out.

Eddie has constantly mounting medical bills for the equipment he needs to manage his paralysis and the resulting complications. Not to mention adaptations that need to be made to the family home and car that allow Eddie some sense of independence. Eddie and Melly have relied for the last two years on a small savings account, the good grace of their church family, and the limited income Eddie has been able to bring in constantly working around doctor and rehab appointments.

Eddie is no longer able to afford physical therapy or rehab and is losing ground in his physical strength. His car is in danger of being repossessed, he’s behind in rent and in danger of being evicted and the hospital he pursuing the medical debt by garnishing his wages.  This lovely family is drowning and asking for help is the last thing they wanted to do, but we are asking for your help on their behalf. Any donation amount will help keep Eddie, Melly and their two young sons in their home, in their car and together as a family.
