My New Knee

Donation protected
I had some complications with my knee replacement. Things are very expensive, and I’m close to flat out broke. I’m living on a fixed income from my retirement, after serving the good people of Denver for 23 years.

I had total knee replacement done on May 14, and went home. On May 15, when the anesthetic wore off, I found myself unable to do simple tasks. I fell out of bed once and had to call the fire department because my helpers couldn’t get me up either.

I was having real trouble getting out of my normal Sleep Number bed. I almost fell a second time. Then I did fall a second time, in the bathroom. Mostly injured my pride, but no one could lift me. Fire department again.

Finally, at 1:00 AM, I could not get up from the toilet, and couldn’t be helped. I got fairly together, considering, and called 911 for an ambulance, where they got me to the hospital where I had the surgery, which provides inpatient care for my insurance.

After 2 1/2 days, they sent me off to The Grim Rehab. Actually, the PT/OT care was great. The food was cold and was mostly like school cafeteria food in the second grade. The room was freezing half the time, and boiling the other half.

I had a problem with urine retention, and they tried to put in a foley catheter. I was screaming for my late mother. The third time, when they started to threaten me, I asked, “What are you doing differently this time that you didn’t do the first 2 times?”

And, know what? I got a reasonable answer.

So I’ve had the thing almost 2 weeks now. I was discharged today (I think because my insurance got tired of paying them), and I’ll get it out Wednesday.

Meanwhile, I’ll be going to the urologist on Wednesday. And it will be gone.

I’m getting a rental hospital bed tomorrow. $125 a week, no delivery charge.

Between equipment bought or rented, prescriptions, and my previous financial state, I simply can’t afford all this. (Prices increased after covid; income did not.)

Every donation will help, whether large or small.
