We are looking for your help to make our short film , created by myself (Kate Stanley Brennan) and actress/award winning dancer Charlene Gleeson, about a girl and her mother's struggle to get to the all Ireland Freestyle Finals. Inspired by Charlene's first hand experience growing up in the competitive ballroom world, we have transported it into a contemporary setting, and at heart, carries an important message for young and old. We have an incredible team but need to raise production costs in 4 weeks to shoot this in Sept.
Whats the story? We see it as a heartwarming, funny film with a compelling narrative and vibrant characters- told through the eyes of Cherry. It is a story of family, community and female empowerment. She doesn't fit into what people may consider the "norm" for a 9yr old girl. But it's this spirit that saves the day in the ferociously competitive world of freestyle dance. This story pokes at preconceived judgments based on gender and "class". A familiar tale, but unfortunately one that still exists in our current climate. This is a story of self discovery and the characters go on personal journeys when forced to let down their guard, and realise we are all ultimately the same people when we're eating our cornflakes, and maybe if we listen to the innocents we are trying to teach, we may learn a thing or two!"
Whats it like?: LittleMiss Sunshine meets the Snapper meets Strictly Ballroom
The Team: I am an Actor/Singer Songwriter and whilst having directed music videos, theatre and written plays/ albums in the past, this will be my directorial debut in film. I have a strong vision for this project and visually I see this world being heightened in terms of colour/ costume / grade. I will also perform alongside Charlene Gleeson (Sarah & Steve) and a stellar supporting cast including Angeline Ball (Commitments), Nelly Conroy (Fair City), Ian-Lloyd Anderson (Dublin OldSchool), Barbara Brennan (Date for Mad Mary) and TKB (Darklands). Lara Hickey is producing, Keith Barry as Assistant Director and Andrew Cummins as DOP amongst a high caliber crew.
Why we need you: We are looking for support during this time as any in kind or self funding went out the window when all our jobs stopped this year! We know we can do this with the help of our friends in the business and with budget goal stated, which is why we really need your help to reach that target in four weeks as we are aiming to shoot in September. If we leave it any later, we may run into problems again regarding restrictions, we can't be sure, but Sept is the safest time to shoot it, in order to get post production done in time also.
Where does the money go? Equipment and DOP expenses, catering on the shooting days, extra safety measures, crew, gaffer, sound, transport, location fees, editing and insurance, contingency and any music rights we need. However I would like to use as much original Irish music in this piece as possible. Whether it be my own or from other artists, the music is another key element of this piece which will really make it a special project.
What do you get? €5+ will get you: Our Eternal Gratitude, and a thank you in the credits €50+ an invite to the cast and crew screening /reception (when it's safe to do so!) €100+ all the above and a free digital download of the soundtrack. €500+: all that and a personal ballroom workshop at home from former Latin American Champion Charlene Gleeson for you and your household and €1000+ will get you an Executive Producer credit and invite to any festival screenings.
