Hi, Dick Dale Music Lovers: A Note From Lana Dale:
Although the photo attached to this campaign is not me, Lana Dale, it is Dick's friend since 1960 and my very special friend since shortly after I married Dick. Joey was with me on that dark Saturday night last March when the love of my life left this earth and has given his limited time to help me since.
To say the least, I was, and continue to be devastated beyond words since Dick passed away.
It's been four months since Dick passed away and the same time period a Go Fund Me account was created. Because so many fans were very generous with their contributions, and in light of the fact circumstances changed after the fund was launched, the following update is provided via the words of Joey.
When the Go Fund Me account was initially established, it was done for the sole purpose of raising funds for a burial plot and granite headstone, as well as anticipated medical expenses, therefore the account was aptly named the Dick Dale Funeral & Medical Expense Fund.
It is unbelievable how much stress is placed on those in bereavement by mortuaries and hospitals alike. Everyday life is put on hold, the hospital and mortuary demanding immediate action: 1) the hospital demanding the deceased be moved to a mortuary within a few days; 2) the mortuary wanting thousands of dollars for even a small funeral, all fees paid prior to interment. No one can be prepared for such an ordeal.
The following day after Dick passed away, after being told Dick's body had to be moved promptly to a mortuary, Lana and I went to a funeral home near the hospital. Lana was shown a few plots and focused on one that she thought would be an ideal resting place for Dick, a music legend. It was expensive, approximately $55,000.00.
Lana prepared the paperwork to start the process and was about to pull out her credit card to put a deposit on the site because the funeral representative put pressure on her in a manner many sales persons do, buy now or it may be gone tomorrow.
I asked for some time to consider the transaction, so we met at my office to discuss the matter further. While at my office I recalled reading an article about another musician whose family had set up a fund to pay for medical expenses, so I did some research and discussed the matter with Lana.
Anticipating that Dick's funeral and medical expenses would exceed $60,000.00, we came to the conclusion that the only way to pay for those expenses would be to create a Go Fund Me account and that is what was done. A week or so later, circumstances changed.
First, I was able to keep the hospital and Lana at bay for two weeks thereby giving Lana extra time to decide the appropriate mortuary to move Dick's body to and to find a way to pay for interment.
Next, by doing so, the need for a burial plot changed.
Why? Lana's desire was to have Dick buried under a large monument, where she and fans could visit him. However, Dick's desire was to be cremated.
So after much deliberation, and intervention by a sibling, cremation was the route that was taken.
The cost for cremation was significantly less than the burial arrangements Lana had anticipated, approximately $54, 00.00 less. Cremation costs were approximately $800.00
Next, anticipated medical expenses were zero because Medicare covered all of those expenses. That fact was totally unanticipated.
Fortunately, many of Dick's fans graciously contributed to the Medical/Funeral Expenses Fund, thus enabling Lana to conduct a beautiful memorial service where family, friends and fans could mingle and talk about how much Dick meant to them. The cost was approximately $9,000.00, of which could be used from the funds collected, approximately $40,000.00 after the fees Go Fund Me levies. The entire $40,000.00 was deposited to Lana's bank account and only she has access to those funds.
Like many performers from the mid fifties, when Dick began his career, the cost of touring consumed a huge portion of the pay received, however, touring is essential to earn money.
Unfortunately, in Dick's later years, because he was very ill, touring was limited to a few times a year, so Dick's earnings were not significant.
Compounding that predicament, because of the advent of Napster and other media where people can upload music for free, entertainers' royalties from music composed was reduced to pennies. Dick depended on that source of income, but it was minimal.
Dick had no retirement. He owned a few exotic cars that are in significant disrepair. He owned his musical equipment which definitely would have value, but those were his tools in trade. In a nutshell, except for a small amount of money from royalty payments and money earned from touring, those earning are what Dick and Lana lived on.
As reflected above, thus far Lana has expended approximately $10,000.00 of the $40,000.00 in funds collected for Dick's funeral expenses. Some has been expended by Lana for her daily living expense. Some funds were paid to Go Fund Me, approximately 8% of funds received.
As indicated above, circumstances have changed after the Go Fund Me account was created.
Because Lana's desire is to continue to keep Dick's spirit alive, Lana would like to use the funds collected thus far from the Funeral/Medical Expense Fund, with funds collected from this revised fund to pay for one, possibly two bronze statues to honor Dick Dale.
I've been told the cost for one statue will run from $18,000.00 to $20,000.00,
Because the reason for the campaign changed shortly after it was commenced, that only one third of the amount of the funds were actually used for burial expenses and none for medical expenses, if anyone thinks I intentionally misrepresented the reasons for the initial Go Fund Me campaign, I apologize.
It has been an arduous ordeal for Lana since Dick died and time was in short supply to accomplish the burial arrangements. Because of those facts, although one could argue this update is dilatory, this update now sets the record straight.
If anyone wants to help with this new campaign, as well as understands how some funds may be used to help Lana with her daily expenses until she regroups, your contributions will be welcome,
