Mexico Earthquake Survivors - Christmas Update

As most of us know, Mexico was hit with one of the strongest earthquakes in their history. With catostrophic earthquakes like this one, come damaged homes and people in need of help. Over this Winter Break, our family was able to travel to Mexico City to tour around. Along the way, we would run into structures that had been completely or partially destroyed by the earthquake. Some of the wealthier people were able to get back on their feet and fix the damages.

Some others are not as fortunate. In Mexico, my mom was able to meet up with her childhood friend, who she had not seen for 30 years. This friend now has a husband and two beautiful children, Max, 11, and Andre, 7. My mom's friend's parents both died within a week from each other and left them their house. They were unfortunately affected by the earthquake more than others. The house has now been declared a total loss. They lived in a tent on the streets for about 15 days. Imagine living in the streets as a child, not knowing whether or not you were going to be able to go back home.

Unfortunately, they were not able to go back home. As of right now, the government says that they will be able to give them some money and some supplies for a new home but has yet to keep the promise. "Some" being the key word here. Imagine how many other people the government has had to help. Right now this family is living in one room brought up by four weak walls in a not-so-great neighborhood that was given to them by the husband's aunt. The kids had to be moved from schools, resulting in bullying and loss of friends. Both their parents are working multiple jobs to try and give them the things they need, such as food and clothes.

Max is an incredibly intelligent boy, who has a passion for engineering. Andre is an incredibly sweet boy, who loves sports, but had lung surgery when he was very little. The family overall has an extremely positive outlook at life. You can tell that as long as they are breathing, they will continue fighting. Most of us have been blessed with everything we have every wanted. Sadly, this family has not. Everything just seems to get harder for them. My brother and I were very humbled by the experience we got to see first hand and decided that, yes others have been affected by this earthquake, but this encounter gave us a different outlook on what we are grateful for. We have not met anyone else in our entire lifetime who deserve at least some bit of relief and happiness in their lives.

Our goal is to help this family reach a state of stability and through all hardships and losses finally have a roof and a firm future for their kids. They need our help and although our goal is steep it is not unreachable and we will fight as hard as we can to reach it. We have to realize how privileged we are and try to help the unfortunate with anything.

We, Juan and Dani, appreciate every dollar and all the support from you guys. We are not doing this because they asked for anything, we are doing it because their humility and graciousness affected our heart sincerely.

Como la mayoría de nosotros sabemos, México fue golpeado con uno de los terremotos más fuertes en su historia. Con terremotos catastróficos como este, dejan casas dañadas y personas necesitadas. Durante estas vacaciones de invierno, nuestra familia pudo viajar a la Ciudad de México para visitar. En el camino, nos encontramos con estructuras que habían sido destruidas total o parcialmente por el terremoto. Algunas de las personas más afortunadas pudieron volver a la normalidad y reparar los daños.

Algunos otros no fueron tan afortunados. En México, mi mamá pudo reunirse con su amiga de la infancia, a quien no había visto en más de 30 años. Esta amiga ahora tiene un esposo y dos hijos hermosos, Max de 11 y Andre de 7. Que por cierto llaman a mi mamá Tia. Los padres de la amiga de mi mamá murieron con una semana de diferencia y les dejaron la casa de ellos. Desafortunadamente fueron afectados por el terremoto más que otros. Su casa ahora ha sido declarada una pérdida total. Vivieron en una carpa en las calles durante unos 15 días. Imagínate vivir en la calle cuando eras niño, sin saber si ibas a poder volver a casa o no.

Desafortunadamente, no pudieron volver a casa. A partir de ahora, el gobierno dice que podrán darles algo de dinero y algunos suministros para un nuevo hogar, pero aún deben cumplir la promesa. "Algunos" es la palabra clave aquí. Imagínese cuántas otras personas ha tenido que ayudar el gobierno. En este momento, esta familia vive en una habitación sostenida por cuatro paredes débiles, cuya puerta es cerrada con un tornillo. El vecindario tampoco es tan bueno. Los niños tuvieron que ser trasladados de las escuelas, lo que resultó en intimidación y pérdida de amigos. Sus padres trabajan en múltiples trabajos para tratar de darles lo que necesitan, como comida y ropa.

Max es un niño increíblemente inteligente, que tiene una pasión por la ingeniería. Andre es un niño increíblemente dulce, que ama los deportes, pero tuvo una cirugía de pulmón cuando era muy pequeño. La familia en general tiene una perspectiva extremadamente positiva de la vida. Podemos decir que mientras respiren, continuarán luchando. La mayoría de nosotros hemos sido bendecidos con todo lo que hemos querido. Lamentablemente, esta familia no. Todo parece ser más difícil para ellos. Mi hermano y yo estuvimos muy conmovidos por la experiencia que tuvimos de ver de primera mano y decidimos que, sí, otros se han visto afectados por este terremoto, pero este encuentro nos dio una perspectiva diferente de ver la vida. No hemos conocido a nadie en toda nuestra vida que merezca al menos un poco de alivio y felicidad en sus vidas.

Nuestro objetivo es ayudar a esta familia a alcanzar un estado de estabilidad y, a través de todas las dificultades y pérdidas, finalmente tener un techo y un futuro firme para sus hijos. Necesitan nuestra ayuda y, aunque nuestra meta es elevada, no es inalcanzable y lucharemos lo más que podamos para alcanzarla. Debemos darnos cuenta de lo privilegiados que somos e intentar ayudar a los desafortunados con cualquier cosa.

Nosotros, Juan y Dani, apreciamos cada dólar y todo el apoyo de ustedes. No estamos haciendo esto porque ellos pidieron algo, lo estamos haciendo porque su amor por la vida y humildad afectaron sinceramente nuestro corazón.
