Matt Waas' brain surgery recovery!

The Story

Here’s the jist of what happened to our dear son, brother, and friend Matt Waas. He was painting our parents second story deck when the railing he was leaning on gave way. He crashed to the ground and landed directly on his head, unable to break his fall with either of his hands or arms. He was taken by EMS to the ER at Cape Cod Hospital where it was determined he had bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull. His neurosurgeon, who was awesome, did not like what he was seeing after a CAT scan and said brain surgery was not only necessary, but needed to happen ASAP. Matt and our family decided this was the best course of action and decided to follow the doctor’s advice. About 30 minutes later Matt was taken into emergency surgery and Dr. Gordon Nakata opened up his skull, drained the blood from his brain and then skillfully put his skull back together with a titanium plate and over 30 staples. He was in the ICU for days and then moved to a regular floor for additional couple days. Thankfully, he has recently returned home. For those of you out there with a kind heart, now is when Matt needs your help. He is in good spirits but is starting to get nervous about the mounting bills and other responsibilities we all face in life. He is unable to work and is unsure of when the time might come that he could even return to work. He has looked into getting disability insurance help but that takes months to go through the process and he’s not eligible for unemployment currently because he’s physically unable to work. That’s why he’s in a tough spot and needs help in a very swift manner.

What Matt Needs

Since Matt works in the hospitality industry as a server, he doesn’t have some of the same benefits that a lot of the rest of us enjoy or are entitled too. When he doesn’t work a shift, he makes no money. So the biggest thing to help him now would be contributing whatever money you can, as soon as you can, so he can pay his essential bills (car payment, car insurance, cell phone, food, clothes, unforeseen medical expenses not covered by insurance, etc.) as well as having money to take care of his boys Luke and Caleb. I know he would be beyond grateful for any help people are willing to provide, as well as our entire family.

In Closing

We are all so grateful he is recovering well and has a positive long-term prognosis. The doctor doesn't believe there will be any mental or physical deficits he will have to deal with. We are all so relieved and want to say thanks to all of you who have sent texts, emails, and well wishes. He is now at home resting and hopefully will be back to his old-self soon! And thank you in advance to any and all of you who are generous to donate and help Matt out!

Thank you all,

The Waas Family
Bill, Sue, Erica, Tim, Dave, Mike & Ty (Matt's nephews)...and especially Luke and Caleb, Matt's boys who he loves more than anything in the world!
