As many athletes do, Zion Clark has always dreamed of being an athlete at the collegiate level. More specifically, as a wrestler! Zion Clark recently graduated from Massillon Washington High School where he wrestled for four years. He didn’t qualify for the state tournament, but he did win the admiration of everyone that watched him compete, which he does with no legs.
After overcoming obstacles like no one could imagine, he is about to realize his dream. Zion has been accepted at Otterbein College in Columbus and is in the running for a top spot on their wrestling team! In order for him to attend Otterbein, Zion needs to pay off his financial obligation to Stark State College where he attended two semesters of school upon graduation. We need to raise $1,400 by August 15 to get Zion’s transcripts to Otterbein in time for a fall start.
“I don’t really think about my disabilities,” Clark said. “I go out and do this because I know I can. I find joy in doing it because it’s my favorite sport.”
Clark was born in Columbus in 1997. He had caudal regression syndrome which is a condition that affects the development of the lower half of the body. He was given up for adoption as a baby and bounced from foster home to foster home, from school to school.
Despite his disabilities, he didn’t let that deter him from competing in the sport that he has loved since he was two years old.
“Wrestling has changed my life to the point where when I come to an obstacle in my life, I instantly figure out a way to get past it and move on.”
As part of his wrestling training, Zion started racing on the track. And, as you can see, Zion puts everything he has into everything he does. He has been racing in places around the country to qualify for the USA Paralympic team. Zion is doing this in a wheelchair that is 20 years old, and much heavier by comparison to his fellow athletes and competitors. An upgrade to a new chair is about $3,500.
Please help us raise $5,000 for this amazing individual. Zion is an inspiration to all of us and we can’t wait to see what his future holds!
